Musing Monday 11/7/16

Musing Monday asks you to choose one of the following prompts to answer each week…

I’m currently reading…
Up next I think I’ll read…
I bought the following book(s) in the past week…
I’m super excited to tell you about (book/author/bookish-news)…
I’m really upset by (book/author/bookish-news)…
I can’t wait to get a copy of…
I wish I could read ___, but…

Random Question: Do you prefer fast-paced novels, or slow, descriptive novels?

I like both kinds of books really. However, in general lately I prefer a book that has a good steady pace. I don’t feel that description has to be sacrificed for a fast pace either, I think you can have both. Make me choose however I will chose something that moves on at a good steady pace over something that spends an entire chapter talking about a rock as an example.

“You clean up nice,” Mina said, trying to ease the tension in the air. “This is a good look for you.” “Thanks,” he muttered. “You look…fantastic.” Mina smirked. “Why, Jared, that may be the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me.” “I cannot tell a lie,” he replied, shrugging before helping Nan into the car.”

Random Question: What’s your favorite horror novel (if you read that genre)?

I generally stay away from the Horror genre, but I guess you could count many of the Vampire books I read as horror. So when I sit down and think about it I am going to pick Grave Peril by Jim Butcher. It is technically Urban Fantasy of course but with the wicked Vampires and the killing of said Vampires and everything else that happens in the book is pretty darn gory. Besides it is one of my favorite books and I am glad I can put it in musing Monday, because any book that has the main wizard character dressed as a cheesy Vampire go to a Vampire ball with a Knight of the cross is nothing but wins in my book.

Book Review: Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander #2) by Diana Gabaldon

For nearly twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to Scotland’s majestic mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones… about a love that transcends the boundaries of time… and about Jamie Fraser, a Scottish warrior whose gallantry once drew a young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his.

Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful copper-haired daughter, Brianna, as Claire’s spellbinding journey of self-discovery continues in the intrigue-ridden Paris court of Charles Stuart… in a race to thwart a doomed Highlands uprising… and in a desperate fight to save both the child and the man she loves

This book really is a great read, it also breaks your heart more then once. As the seasons of Outlander play, I have been rereading as the seasons come and I forgot how much I loved these books. Dragonfly in Amber is a new adventure and we get to spend a great deal of time with the beautiful and feisty Brianna. I always have a bit of a smile when I think of her, Jamie and Calire are both super stubborn in their own rights, mix the blood together and you get a girl who wants to do all of her own things no matter what anyone says.

Better yet we spend time in Paris, as Claire and Jamie have to work through the intrigue of court life. Trying to put off what happens at Culloden. If you are a fan of the show you should enjoy the books as well, the source material is great. If you have read the books it’s time to jump in once more for fun. Dragonfly in Amber is a stunning part of the series and great as a standalone as well.

“Tell the truth, Giovanni Vecchio.” A mischievous look came to her eye. “You have a butler, a cool car, and I’ve only ever seen you at night…”

He froze, tension suddenly evident in the set of his shoulders. Beatrice leaned closer and whispered, “You’re Batman, aren’t you?”

Random Question: Take a guess at what might happen in the book you’re currently reading.

Well like all kinds of romances I think there will be a happily ever after. I think that it won’t happen of course until some big truths are revealed. Sadly I am being a poke about my book again, just was a bad week last week. We all have them. With that said I am looking forward to see what will be coming next. I love that the Vampire’s in this book are elemental and find it very interesting that our main character is an electrical or fire elemental. Vampires and fire after all don’t mix. It sure gets my creative juices flowing when I dig into this book, very glad that it is a series because I know I will be getting into it more. So far there is 4 books and a novella that I can see listed on goodreads so that covers the elements. I hope that our heroine in this one finds her Father because I certainly don’t think that he is dead.

Can you hear the bells yet?

The time of year that everyone (but me) seems to love is right around the corner. As soon as the Halloween decor came out of course so did the Christmas items. That is one of the biggest reasons I have issues with Christmas, every year they seem to put out the decorations earlier and earlier and intruding upon my favorite holiday. With all of that said, I am trying really trying this year to get into the spirit and enjoy. I gave my word that I would try.

Of course I make most of my holiday items by hand, anyone who has taken a look at Creations of Bastet has seen how obsessive I can be about my handmade items, I just love them. However, I also know there are somethings I just can’t make on my own, sure would be fun if I could! I have a lot of musicians in my life and there is no way I can make instruments or most of the things that go with them. Luckily I can shop at musiciansfriend.com for everything that I need for the musicians in my life. Then I can go ahead and make a fun crochet guitar strap or some other fun accessory that goes with the instruments. See I can still work my own fun obsessions in with things I can’t make myself.

No new book today I am being a slow poke. There will be a new one next week though. This is a good book so fun to share quotes anyways.

“So, the wooden stake through the heart thing is apparently a myth, but you can be killed by fire. Anything else?”

“Should I be concerned that one of your first questions is how to kill me?”

Her jaw dropped. “What? No! I didn’t mean… I was just curious.”

He snorted. “Well you can remain so.”

“What about the sun?” she asked. “Extra toasty?”

“I’m not going to burst into flames, but I avoid tanning beds.”

“Silver?”

“Some of my favorite cufflinks.”

“Garlic?”

“Please,” he sneered. “I’m Italian.”
