Last week’s quote was a bit dark I know, sorry if it upset anyone a bit. It is real life for sure though. I’ll be posting my review for that book soon, it really is a great book.

So funny story about this weeks quote. I picked up a copy of this book at Half Price bookshop when I was visiting my Mom. I forgot….I had read this one as the second book in the series. *Insert epic facepalm here* It wasn’t until I started reading it that I went, oh damn, I already read this one ages ago. Whoops. Since I bought the copy I figured I might as well read it again, lol then move to book 3 maybe I will read before for I forget I read book 2 this time, lol.

This week’s random question: What is one over-hyped book that you’ve heard so much about but strongly dislike?

This is one of those questions I usually avoid because people can be very passionate about it. I know I can be passionate about it, because when I love a book even if it has hype, I love a book. That being said, I must of course answer my question this week, since I chickened out last week, lol.

One book that has been so hyped up that I really just can’t stand is Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed. The movie looked good when it came out and since I took the pledge to read before I watch, of course I got a copy of the book. I really wish I had not. The movie wasn’t fantastic either, but better than the book. I don’t understand the hype at all. The book is boring, it is very clear she did not do as much walking on the trail as she claimed and she made me not like snapple lemonade which was one of my favorite lemonades. I have to stop myself from going on more now, LOL I really am passionate about not liking the book. I don’t hold back much in my review about it either. So how about you?

Just finishing this one up now. It is a good one and I think everyone should read it, especially for anyone who is enjoying the show based on it now, New Amsterdam.

First things first, I am sorry about all the typos last week, last time I work up a post after a night of no sleep, lol. Second thing Good luck on the random question this week, haha I feel cruel because I don’t think I can answer my own question. Instead, I am going with, Up next I think I’ll read…. something not historical. I have been reading a lot of historicals lately, with a smattering of modern here and there. I picked up the second book in the Angel Series by JR Ward when I was back in MN and that one seems to be calling my name…

Book Review: Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf

In the familiar setting of Holt, Colorado, home to all of Kent Haruf’s inimitable fiction, Addie Moore pays an unexpected visit to a neighbor, Louis Waters. Her husband died years ago, as did his wife, and in such a small town they naturally have known of each other for decades; in fact, Addie was quite fond of Louis’s wife. Every once in a while you read a book that truly strikes a chord with you. Some could even say it might be a life changing book. For me, this book is one of those rare books. I read it as part of my commitment to reading books before I see the movie or TV show based on them, and I have never been so glad that I followed that rule.

Our souls at night is an amazing book, it really speaks to the human condition and just how do we cope when life as we know it blows apart. Two people in their golden years find companionship, fondness and love by just needing someone to talk to, the desire for companionship. It truly to me speaks out, we as people are social creatures. Sure, some of us would rather be alone, or we all go through times where it is easier to be alone, but at the end of the day we all need someone to talk to. We need something to hold onto and to keep us grounded in life. When our kids grow up and move out, when our beloved spouse of long years passes away, what happens. So many end up ghosting through life after events, or worse. The night hours, the long dark nights when everyone else is asleep can often be the worst. Our souls at night examines that corner of who we are as people, when many books and stories turn away. I don’t want to give the full plot away, but I have to say read it. Read it and know that no matter how things are, no matter how alone we feel there are ways to find that companionship. You can start new no matter what age you are.

Book Review: The 100 by Kass Morgan

You are about to read a sentence that I have never written before (that I can recall) and most likely will not do so again. Don’t bother with the book at all and stick with the TV series. Honestly, I feel like I am saving you time here. Normally when you read a book you get more detail than you could ever hope to get on screen. I mean I don’t know a single reader that hasn’t said a book they love should have been turned into a 12 hour epic that covers everything. That is so very much not the case with this book.

The pacing is wrong, the focus is wrong and I just want to slap some of the characters so hard. Where as on the show sure I want to smack a few characters, but I understand the motivation the have, I feel invested and I get more details. The book really just seems to fall truly and epicly flat. This is a series about humanity. It makes sure to show us the best and the worst, the human strength and the human weakness. The book just misses that mark very epicly. The book seems to dance around and focus more on all of the shitty things that we do for love. I mean it is true, we do a lot of stupid things for love that is human nature. I just don’t like that focus, like it is trying to be a romance novel and it doesn’t need all of that. There is plenty of love that happens without needing to focus on it. So my bottom line, watch the show and enjoy that and save your time don’t, read the book.

I took a few weeks off from posting Musing Monday to make a choice on what I wanted to do with it. I have also been super busy, so it was a good time to let it breath as it were. For the moment I want to keep going with Musing Monday and I hope that everyone still enjoys it.

This week’s random question: If you could no longer read, what do you think you would do as a hobby instead?

Okay, I know the idea of not being able to read is a horrow show for most of us. I know it is for me, but perhaps that is suiting for the month of October, since it is my favorite time of the year. But in all honesty what do you think you would be spending your time doing instead? I have a lot of hobbys, several of which have been spun into buisness work and if I am honest I have struggled in the past few years to fnd more time to read. I am working on that though. So for me this question is fairly easy.

If all of a sudden I couldn’t read or all of the books suddenly vanished from the planet I know I would have severl things I could fall back on. Crochet would be my first choice more then likely. After that I would do some of my other favorites like beading, candle making and a lot of the tinkering stuff I do. Pen pal of course, because I could never live without my paper and my fountain pen ink and pens.

I could probaly make a never ending list of things I would do with more time. I will also of course say if books vanished I would make it my personal mission to write some books so that we could have books again. I love to write, truly and I have many book ideas that I have just not been able to sit down and work on, flesh out and write. It is on my goal and to do list to find the time. Most likely once my buisness is in a place where I feel like I can step back a little more. Being better about all of my blogging would be a good place to start, right? I am so behind on reviews I wanna swat myself for it, but people forgive me, right? *LOL*

So now that I have made a little bit of a novella here for you about what I would do without books, you may think I would be fine without them. I totally wouldn’t, I love my books and want them here. So what would you do?

I took a few weeks off from posting Musing Monday to make a choice on what I wanted to do with it. I have also been super busy, so it was a good time to let it breath as it were. For the moment I want to keep going with Musing Monday and I hope that everyone still enjoys it.

This week’s random question: What helps you make the choice to read a certain book?

I think we all have habits and routines when it comes to picking what we will read next, so I am curious what yours might be. Do you go based on the author? Only a certain genre? Maybe the cover? It takes a series or an author I really, really like to have them go right on my must read list. There are a few that make it though, Lauren Willig is one of those lucky few. I will also admit that I like covers, I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but sometimes I just can’t help but be drawn in by one. I try not to dismiss a book because I don’t like a cover, but I can be a sucker for a good one for sure.
