THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: Do you like all the holiday books turned to movies this time of year?

I know I have asked similar but as I have been watching a few holiday movies and can’t wait to see the man who invented Christmas it was on my mind. As much as I sometimes can be a bit of a bah-humbug about things I actually enjoy a good holiday movie and even more so if its based on a book or about a book. I am really excited about the man who invented Christmas for example because it’s about the author who did seem to invent Christmas as we know it. It looks heart warming and funny as well which always make for a good spirit lift this time of year. It is so easy to feel downcast this time of year. Happens to all of us once in a while but I think these little sparks of good will and warmth help whatever form they come in.

Okay one random little bit of shop keeping as it were before I jump into this weeks Muse. I have noticed since the take over that while Teaser Tuesday still seems to be doing well and healthy, Musing Monday seems to be getting less and less participation. Now I do not want to seem like I am whining I promise I am not, but I have to ask is there something I could do better? Are the questions to boring or different? Or perhaps it is time to retire this weekly meme? I won’t be offended whatever the answers might be. I do just honestly want to make sure everyone is enjoying the memes. Alright with that out of the way on we go.

THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: Do you like or dislike series books?

A friend and I talked about this not to long ago, he does not really like series books were I tend to enjoy them because I like spending time with characters I get to know. For me when I get involved in a series that I like I enjoy being able to watch characters grow and spend time with them. Sometimes it can be like spending time with old friends. I can say that I have even mourned when a series ends and I no longer gets to spend time with the characters I have grown to love. So what is your feeling on series books?

“I have always been a reader; I have read at every stage of my life, and there has never been a time when reading was not my greatest joy. And yet I cannot pretend that the reading I have done in my adult years matches in its impact on my soul the reading I did as a child. I still believe in stories. I still forget myself when I am in the middle of a good book. Yet it is not the same. Books are, for me, it must be said, the most important thing; what I cannot forget is that there was a time when they were at once more banal and more essential than that. When I was a child, books were everything. And so there is in me, always, a nostalgic yearning for the lost pleasure of books. It is not a yearning that one ever expects to be fulfilled.”― Diane Setterfield, The Thirteenth Tale

Book Review: Ross Poldark (The Poldark Saga #1) by Winston Graham

In the first novel in Winston Graham’s hit series, a weary Ross Poldark returns to England from war, looking forward to a joyful homecoming with his beloved Elizabeth. But instead he discovers his father has died, his home is overrun by livestock and drunken servants, and Elizabeth—believing Ross to be dead—is now engaged to his cousin. Ross has no choice but to start his life anew.

Thus begins the Poldark series, a heartwarming, gripping saga set in the windswept landscape of Cornwall. With an unforgettable cast of characters that spans loves, lives, and generations, this extraordinary masterwork from Winston Graham is a story you will never forget.

This was of course a re-read for me as I have loved Ross Poldark for quite sometime. This book of course was as good as I remembered and Ross the hotheaded but good hearted man I remembered him to be. The new cover art thanks to the new BBC movie is also something worth enjoying (lol) truly I think that Aidan Turner makes Ross to spring off the page.

There are many who don’t like the books because of some of the content. All I can say is two things about that. The first being Ross and the others in the book are very flawed humans not the standard romantic heroes. So they do a lot of wrong things. Also when these books were written the style of romance was much more forceful. Simple as that. This is not to make excuses and there are things I don’t appreciate that happen, even when they are done by my beloved Ross.

Anyways I digress. This book is well written and tells a story that could truly happen to any of us. Ross was a happy young man who went away to war with the thought of love and what he would come back to. However, war changed him, but worst of all the world he left was as if he stepped through the looking glass when he returned. His father gone his lady love going to marry his cousin. You can hardly blame the man for being angry for lashing out. Can you honestly say that any of us wouldn’t act in a similar manner? He is a good man with a heart that hates seeing people treated unfairly. I don’t want to go too far into saying things because I could truly go on for a long time about the whole series and giveaway the spoilers and details.

This is one that you should read even if you already watch the show. If you have not read the books you really are missing out in my humble opinion.

A book that was long favored by many of my friends. I noticed that I often have a habit of staying away from books when they first come hot on the trend list. I am not sure why that is…this one was even given to me as a gift by a friend to encourage me to read it. I set it aside…over and over. No particular reason why, lol. This last week was a busy so I did not read as much as I had hoped so you get another quote from this one. All that being said I can say that I am kicking myself for taking so long to get around to this book and enduring many I told you so’s.

“All morning I struggled with the sensation of stray wisps of one world seeping through the cracks of another. Do you know the feeling when you start reading a new book before the membrane of the last one has had time to close behind you? You leave the previous book with ideas and themes — characters even — caught in the fibers of your clothes, and when you open the new book, they are still with you.”

THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: What do you think of ghostwriters??

As someone who does a fair amount of ghost writing myself for work I have long wondered what other’s think of them. For my part I try and stick with non fiction work and blog posts, things like that. I have been asked on ocassion to do fiction but most of the time I turn it down because I feel if I am going to write a work of fiction it will be my own. With that being said I know that there are some huge names out there that use ghostwriters. This is going to sound hypocritical because I do writing work but often times I don’t like it. Maybe it is because I do the work that I can generally tell when an author has used a ghostwriter? We all have our own style and even when a ghostwriter tries to copy as close to the ordinal as possible it still to me feels different. This can often ends up with books in the same series feeling like they do not belong together. I won’t automatically stop reading an author if they use a ghostwriter I try to judge books on their content more then anything. What about you?

Happy Halloween and Happy Samhain to those who celebrate that way! One of my favorite days of the year indeed. I hope everyone has a great one.

THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: Have you ever met someone who really REALLY likes to talk about all the classic books they have read? If so what did you think?

I have no real idea why this one is on my mind today but it is book related so here it is. I myself have met people from all walks and indeed some have loved to list off the classical books they have read like a badge of honor. In general I do think most of them were just making conversation and not meaning anything by listing classical books. I know in one case these really were the books they enjoyed.

That being said. I have also come across a few who I think were just trying to be pretentious about it. I hate saying that and I hate saying the term book snob too, but sometimes that is what it is. These times I have known it was about reading higher minded things were usually after I had mentioned a bodice ripper or YA book that I enjoyed. It came across as very well ha you’re reading THAT? Here is what I have read. So what if I like a nice fun bodice ripper sometimes? I know what they are it is not like I think they are Dickens. I have read my share of classical books too, some I like some bore me just like modern ones. I am all about read what you like personally.
