Happy Treason Day!!!!

No really Happy 4th of July and Happy Birthday America and Captain America. Even if we did commit treason to get where we are today. This is one of my favorite Holidays and not for the reasons many people enjoy it. Oh sure I enjoy the fireworks and BBQ as much as the next gal, but I enjoy the history behind it. I am fascinated with reading books about the revolution. One of my favorites so far has been this fantastic book Revolutionary. Still a review I agree with!

So enjoy the day! Think about the history and the people who continue to defend us and have a little bit of fun!

Do you write in your books? Highlight? In all books or just things like college textbooks?

No I don’t. Not in any book at all. Not in a text book not in any book. I just I can’t I see it as marring the book. I may put post its in the book with notes about things I need to remember or reference later. That is as far as I will go. I know there are many people who go ahead and write or highlight in books but the idea of it always makes me cringe.

I am not even kidding one of my loved ones once purposely sat and highlighted in a book just to watch me twitch, he thought it was very funny. I on the other hand was ready to grab the book from him and run away with it before he could cause it anymore harm.

Do you own fewer books than you used to? More?

Or do you find the quantity in your library stays pretty much the same from year to year?

(And yes, digital and audio books DO count.)

Well if we are counting digital books then I have way more then I used to. My hard copy books tend to stay about the same because I have the same space for them. Sometimes it jumps up a bit when I clear some space, but with how much I have been focused on yarn and crochet that has not happened as much. My digital library however, well there is no spacial limits on that right? So I have a lot and I keep getting more. I can’t help myself. I especially love the text to speech function on my current Fire. Seems to make it easier to do my favorite thing, multi tasking.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: What made you fall in love with reading?

The stories and the worlds that books took me too. For as long as I can remember I have always loved reading. My parents started me on some of the classics like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn and I just took off from there. Like all kids, I read hop on pop and other such simple books when I was tiny but I did not stay satisfied with them for long. I wanted bigger books and more exotic stories, along with the enjoyment of comics sometimes as well. I spent many a happy summer reading a collection of comic strips in a book from the library, Garfield and Calvin and Hobbs were favorites, still are really.

My love of reading really is that simple, I love a good story. I love living in a world that is apart from mine. I feel the saying you see on meme’s all over the internet these days is true, those who don’t read only live one life. Those who do read can live thousands. A good book will always transport me into it and I feel as if I am walking right along side the characters of the book, living the journey with them whatever may come. It is one of my deepest hopes that I never lose that joy, that I never lose that passion and ability to be transported into another world and live an entirely different life for the span of time it takes me to read the book.

Memorial Day

Today I skip Musing Monday in honor of Memorial Day. Freedom is so often taken for granted specially in today’s age. However, freedom is not free it is in fact very expensive and the cost is measured in lives. While everyone debates and throws things back and forth during an election year I hope they will all take a moment to remember why they have the freedom to debate and share their feelings on candidates.

memorial-day-thank-you2

We will go back to our regularly scheduled book blogging for the rest of the week but for now. I shall just leave this hear. Thank you to all of our service men and women who have given of themselves. Whether they gave some or all, I salute all of them. A respectful nod is also given from me to those men and women throughout the world who have defended freedoms. While I support the American armed forces the most as an American I know others fight for freedom as well.

Book Review: Cerulean Sins (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #11) (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #11) by Laurell K. Hamilton

A book review of:

Cerulean Sins, the eleventh entry in the hugely-popular Anita Blake series, finds everyone’s favorite vampire hunter keeping house and kicking butt.

Anita Blake is trying to get her life back to “normal” after a break-up with her werewolf lover. She has settled into a pattern of domesticity, which means that the new man in her life, the leopard shapeshifter Micah, has no problem sharing her with Jean-Claude, Master Vampire of the City. Things are as peaceful as they ever get for someone who raises the dead, when Jean-Claude receives an unexpected and unwelcome visitor: Musette, the very beautiful, very twisted representative of the European Council of Vampires. Anita soon finds herself caught up in a dangerous game of vampire power politics.

To add to her troubles, she is asked to consult on a series of brutal killings, which seem to be the work of something un-human. The investigation leads her to Cerulean Sins, a vampire-run establishment that deals in erotic videos, videos that cater to very specific tastes. Anita knows one creature of the night who has such interests — Jean-Claude’s visitor. But if Anita brings Musette down, the repercussions could cost her everything she holds dear.

Once a sworn enemy of all monsters, Anita is now the human consort of both Master Vampire Jean Claude and leopard shapeshifter Micah. When a centuries-old vampire hits St. Louis, Anita finds herself needing all the dark forces her passion can muster to save the ones she loves.

Anita Blake returns to find hell hath no fury like a vampire scorned.

Back into the world of Anita Blake and I am sadly starting to ask myself why I am still reading. It is not that the book is completely bad, it isn’t, but there is starting to be a pretty clear pattern emerging and I am left wanting to smack Anita when I am reading and when I sit down to write my book review.

We once again have an ubber strong vampire visiting from out of town, who wants to control Anita and surprise, surprise tests her knowing full well how she is going to react anyways. Anita of course pisses off super bad vampire and breaks rules, funny super bad vampire broke rules anyways. Anita sleeps with some more people, and then has a boo hoo fit over it. Also, she still won’t let the multiple boyfriends be with anyone else. Hypocrite much?

So the basic theme of this book is vampire violence and a lot of sex. I am not a prude or really one who minds violence in books, but at this point it is becoming repetitive and Anita needs to grow up. So why three stars instead of less? Asher is what saved this book for me from getting totally bombed and being a DNF, I have loved Asher since he first showed up in the series and getting to finally know a little bit more about him and his story made me feel better. I still wanted to slap Anita for not allowing Jean Claude to be with Asher since she has a billion boy toys, but Asher really has my heart at this point. So if I am reading further into the series after this book review, it will be because of him and not so much Anita. Unless we get our kicking ass and taking names girl back.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Name a book you thought you wouldn’t like, but ended up loving.

Twilight. Honestly I love the series. I know it is not the best written series of books ever and the idea of sparkling vampires is laughable and the fight scene that never happens is like COME ON, but honestly I still love the books. The story that it is trying to tell is good and I really love a lot of the supporting characters like Jasper and Carlisle. I would love to have learned more about them and have their stories fleshed out better. I really did think I would hate the series but I didn’t.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: What do you think is the most overrated book?

50 shades of grey and all of it’s little buddies. Seriously I do not understand how so many women can just LOVE that book. It is just so BAD, the writing is just bad. I read them and while I found them somewhat enjoyable (and it was probably just because I was laughing at how bad) the first time, the second time (why did I read them again?) they were just BAD.

It also gives a very very bad look at BDSM, which already gets a bad wrap by people who don’t understand it. BDSM is not about stalking, it is not about controlling every single part of someones life and it is not about being abusive. If Christian Grey was a poor guy who dressed in ratty jeans and a t-shirt I doubt so many women would be cooing and drooling all over him. But because he is a Billionaire who dresses in nice suits he’s, “hot” and “misunderstood”, sorry but nope. Just nope.

I may have been a little bit fierce this week in my reply but it has been one of those days.

Strumstick

Everyone knows about guitars and drums but how many people have heard of Strumsticks? The Strumstick is a relatively new instrument in the realm of music, it was invented in 1981 by Bob McNally and was designed as a different version of the Backpacker Guitar. The strumstick is essentially a version of the The Stringed Pennywhistle and is truly a different and fun instrument for those who love something different when it comes to music. Stretch your imagination and play a bit check out the Strumstick!
