Random Question: Do you think books by controversial people should be read or not?

This question came up when I was having a chat with a friend about Hitler’s book. I will preface, though I shouldn’t have to, I in no way agree with Hitler, the man was evil to the core and beyond scary. With that said, I have actually read his book.I don’t tend to broadcast the fact and rarely talk about it because people pass judgement when they hear you have. So do you think books like Mein Kampf or OJ Simpsons I did it should be read? I personally think that yes, we should read them if inclined, not to celebrate them, but to try and find some kind of understanding (although of course there isn’t always going to be that) of what made this person tick. However, there is also a part of me that knows books have power and some who would read these books will use them to justify their own acts so wants to say burn them all. Realistically though any book at all can be turned into something of a rally cry or justification for horrible acts. The Catcher and the Rye anyone? So what do you think?

Random Question: What would be the first book you would want someone who has never read a book before to be?

A talk with a friend the other day lead me to think about how much I take for granted that I can read. Not only can I read, but I have been encouraged to read for well probably longer than I remember. There are still places where this isn’t the case, and they aren’t all developing countries either. Plenty of literacy issues right here in the United States to go around. I think for me the first book I would give someone to read is Black Beauty. For me that book is just one of those books that can change how you feel about reading, even life changing. Sure, it is a classic, but the story it tells is still so relevant today. The message of Kindness being best and that we all go through hard times in our lives, lose friends, yeah now I am getting emotional thinking about it. I really love Black Beauty. I would probably also include Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn as follow ups because two more stories that I will never get enough of.

So what book would you give?

Random Question: Have you ever had an argument over a book?

I am sure we have all had those little tiffs and saying oh I don’t like a book with a friend. However, have you ever legit had a big argument over a book? I had one friend who was merciless over me actually liking the Twilight books. Yes, I know they aren’t well written, yes, I know real vampires don’t sparkle, so what I was entertained okay? She just would not lay off about it, we had a real argument over the whole thing. Eventually we did make up and she agreed that she should have just left me alone because we all like different books. I mean I can’t say how many times I have had to plead the 5th when people ask me about 50 shades…..oi vey.

Random Question: Is there anything you don’t like about reading?

I know this seems like a very silly question to ask a bunch of readers. However, I think even in the things we love there is always a little something we don’t like. An example for me is with my crochet, I LOVE it. I love everything about it, except when it comes time to weave in all the ends at the end of a project. This I HATE.

So when it comes to reading for me I dislike the fact that I have a hard time DNFing a book. I suppose that is more about me then reading itself but off the top of my head that is the biggest thing I don’t like about reading, lol. I just have this habit that it is very hard once I have committed to a book for me to say I just can’t finish it. I have this habit of saying, “Well I will give it one more chapter and see if it gets better” and then it will go “Well I am already 150 pages in I mean it would be sad to stop now…” and thus I get myself stuck in a book I really don’t like much, lol.

Random Question: Do you ever make a reading playlist?

I love to read, but silence is not one of my favorite things. When you are outside in nature, there is always some kind of natural soundtrack. I particularly love reading near water. Inside, though I have found you can get that odd to me unnatural silence. So I always tend to have something playing, TV, music or sometimes a rain soundtrack things like that.

Recently I have caught myself making a playlist here and there for sitting down to read a certain genre. I haven’t done it for a specific book just yet, but I have a historical fiction playlist and an adventure playlist so far. Is it just me? I know I am weird, so it could be. LOL.

Welcome to July. Goodness where is the time going this year? It seems to be going by very fast!

Random Question: Do you ever get teased or looked at oddly for reading?

My recent travels made me notice a few things I have been overlooking for a long time. I love to read, I always try to bring a book with me either in my Kindle or a hard copy anytime I go somewhere. I do this with crochet as well, but let’s stick to the books for the moment, lol. At home, I tend to get more judgmental looks and I have even had people call me weird for choosing to sit in a park and read for several hours. I have been teased as a bookworm both good natured and not so good natured.

However, while I was abroad, I didn’t have any of those things happen. Instead, I was several times asked what I was reading and had some nice conversations about books. I noticed overall there were a lot of other people reading as well. I saw people like me reading on public transport or in parks just enjoying a nice day. I am not saying this doesn’t happen in the US and I am not saying everyone in Europe reads, but there were enough moments that happened to make me take note.

Random Question: How does reading making you feel?

This might seem like a silly question to ask, but I know when I am reading I can run a gamut of different emotions, about the book and just in general. The first thing I tend to feel when I pick up a new book to read is excited. It is something fresh and new to dive into. New stories to know about, new people to meet you can’t go wrong. I will also fully admit to the fact that more than once a book has made me laugh out loud, or sob or feel overly emotional in many different ways. I really love books.

Random Question: How do you feel about book of the month type clubs/groups?

I used to belong to some fantastic book groups when I lived in Minnesota. We didn’t have books we read at the same time but we got together and talked about our reads and just enjoy time together. Really I find myself missing that rather a lot. I have not been able to find a group like that since moving from Minnesota and I wish I could. I tried a monthly book club locally to where I am now but I just found that I didn’t really fit with that. I like to read what I want to read and well most of the books being read by that group were not ones I really enjoy. Not one historical in the bunch! Gah! And they were not willing to listen to the new girls thoughts on changing it up a little. So in the end I stopped going, fair enough not every group is for every person. But I do miss getting together with like minded people, friends and having a nice chat about books and just life and everything else. How about you?

Random Question: Do you multi task while reading? blockquote>

The other day I was at the gym and saw someone reading while on the treadmill. That is what prompted this question, I don’t remember seeing someone do that before. I myself find that even if I intend to do more then one thing at once like read and walk or read and cook I never end up being able to do it. Either I wind up needing to fully focus on what I’m doing or getting sucked into the book. I have even have had times when I will sit down to start a new book, get to the end of it and notice 8 hours passed without me getting anything at all done 😂. So how about you?

Random Question: Do you use reading to escape stress?

Sometimes when I’m stressed I have issues focusing but I do look at reading as an escape. Sometimes takes me longer to finish a book because of the focus issues but in general it’s a good escape.
