Up next I think I’ll read…
I bought the following book(s) in the past week…
I’m super excited to tell you about (book/author/bookish-news)…
I’m really upset by (book/author/bookish-news)…
I can’t wait to get a copy of…
I wish I could read ___, but…
I blogged about ____ this past week…

THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: How do you experience a book when you read? In general do you often find yourself being drawn into the story quickly or do you need more time to warm up to characters?

I know that often times how we experience a book is based on the book itself, but I have found over the years that I do tend to have general habits towards a book and I thought others might as well. Honestly more times then not I find myself drawn into the world of the book quickly, which is good because I can get impatient with slow starters. I like to jump in with both feet and just try and picture myself a “fly on the wall” in the characters’ lives. How about you?

THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: Do you prefer plot driven books or character driven books?

Happy December!

A friend and I were having a chat about a recent read, which turned into a little bit of an argument over if it was plot or character driven which lead to this question today! I myself find I prefer character driven books. Don’t get me wrong plot is so important but for me it is the characters that I truly connect with and when I click with them I enjoy the book all the more. I love watching a character grow and change as I follow them through the journey they are taking and perhaps that is why I end up enjoying series so much as well. So how about you?

Book Review: The Viking (Viking #1) by Marti Talbott

At not quite fifteen, Stefan’s father finally let him board the longship Sja Vinna to take part in his first Viking raid. Yet, the battle was not at all what he expected and he soon found himself alone and stranded in Scotland.

Thirteen-year-old Kannak’s problem was just as grave. Her father deserted them and the only way to survive, she decided, was to take a husband over her mother‘s objections. Suddenly she was helping a hated Viking escape. Could Kannak successfully hide a Viking in the middle of a Scottish Clan? And why was someone plotting to kill the clan’s beloved laird?

Tis the season where I try to play catch up on my reviews. My bad, again maybe 2018 will be better, LOL on the bright side I am not as behind on my reading as I was last year. Anyways to the review.

It took me a little while to get into this book, but once I did I was hooked. It was a freebie and really it shouldn’t have been, but a great way to get someone hooked for the series! The first chapter or so goes slow but don’t give up, trust me, you’ll get hooked and enjoy the read. Stefan takes such an interesting journey when he is stranded in Scotland, literally see’s his family everything he knows taken away. He has to find a way to live again. If that wasn’t entertaining enough, it gives you a strong female lead like Kannak who has to make her own hard life choices at a young age and one of those choices is hiding the Viking outsider in a Scottish Clan, I mean talk about a grown up choice for a young woman to make.

The story is an adventure and danger and a good dash of love involved. While the players may be young when we meet them, it’s important to remember that in the times of Vikings, life spans were shorter and so people grew up faster. It was a harsh time, with death and blood everywhere as the book shows us flat off and by the ongoing looming plot there is to kill the clans laird. I don’t want to give too much of the plot away because I think everyone who loves this genre should read this one and judge it for themselves, I promise you will be hooked and not that I would judge a book by it’s cover but look at the cover it’s a beauty! Honestly, that is what drew me in when I was browsing freebies on kindle that and because it was about one of my favorite groups of people Vikings. This is an interesting look into the life of the time, a time where things were very much influx interns of religion and how people were traveling. A time in life that was very unique.

THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: Do you like all the holiday books turned to movies this time of year?

I know I have asked similar but as I have been watching a few holiday movies and can’t wait to see the man who invented Christmas it was on my mind. As much as I sometimes can be a bit of a bah-humbug about things I actually enjoy a good holiday movie and even more so if its based on a book or about a book. I am really excited about the man who invented Christmas for example because it’s about the author who did seem to invent Christmas as we know it. It looks heart warming and funny as well which always make for a good spirit lift this time of year. It is so easy to feel downcast this time of year. Happens to all of us once in a while but I think these little sparks of good will and warmth help whatever form they come in.

Okay one random little bit of shop keeping as it were before I jump into this weeks Muse. I have noticed since the take over that while Teaser Tuesday still seems to be doing well and healthy, Musing Monday seems to be getting less and less participation. Now I do not want to seem like I am whining I promise I am not, but I have to ask is there something I could do better? Are the questions to boring or different? Or perhaps it is time to retire this weekly meme? I won’t be offended whatever the answers might be. I do just honestly want to make sure everyone is enjoying the memes. Alright with that out of the way on we go.

THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: Do you like or dislike series books?

A friend and I talked about this not to long ago, he does not really like series books were I tend to enjoy them because I like spending time with characters I get to know. For me when I get involved in a series that I like I enjoy being able to watch characters grow and spend time with them. Sometimes it can be like spending time with old friends. I can say that I have even mourned when a series ends and I no longer gets to spend time with the characters I have grown to love. So what is your feeling on series books?

“I have always been a reader; I have read at every stage of my life, and there has never been a time when reading was not my greatest joy. And yet I cannot pretend that the reading I have done in my adult years matches in its impact on my soul the reading I did as a child. I still believe in stories. I still forget myself when I am in the middle of a good book. Yet it is not the same. Books are, for me, it must be said, the most important thing; what I cannot forget is that there was a time when they were at once more banal and more essential than that. When I was a child, books were everything. And so there is in me, always, a nostalgic yearning for the lost pleasure of books. It is not a yearning that one ever expects to be fulfilled.”― Diane Setterfield, The Thirteenth Tale
