Book Blast: Silver-White by Shawn Underhill

Silver-White by Shawn Underhill

“The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep.”
~ Robert Frost

*Evie’s family has been holding out on her …

Big time.

On an unexpected visit to her grandparents’ house in New Hampshire’s secluded North Woods, the sixteen-year-old literally runs into the truth of the long-hidden family secrets, and finds herself thrust without warning into the clandestine world of the Great North Pack—a wild and exhilarating world of rugged beauty, heart-pounding adventures, and long nights running under a sea of stars … but as she’s set to discover, a world also fraught with potential dangers lurking in the shadows.

Praise
“Simply put, this book was amazing. I’ve read more fantasy novels than I can count, but this one is certainly one of the best. The heroine isn’t some wishy-washy pansy that screams at everything, and the focus of the story isn’t on some unbelievably beautiful teenage girl who suddenly becomes the biggest, baddest member of her species falling in love with some big, bad, sexy member of her newfound species. It’s about a girl becoming something she never knew existed, finding her place within the pack family she values more than ever before, and an age-old feud that threatens everything she loves.” ~Morgan

Book Review: Revealed (House of Night #11) by P.C. Cast, Kristin Cast

Revealed is the spellbinding eleventh and penultimate installment in the #1 New York Times bestselling vampyre series by PC and Kristin Cast.

Drastically altered after her fall at the end of Hidden, Neferet is now more dangerous than ever—and her quest for vengeance will wreak havoc on humans, as well as Zoey and her friends. Chaos is loosed in Tulsa and the House of Night is blamed. Can Zoey stop Neferet in time to keep her anger from escalating to full-on war? Or will someone else have to step in to take the fall?

The House of Night series is an international phenomenon, reaching #1 on U.S., German, and UK bestseller lists, and remaining a fixture on The New York Times Children’s Series bestseller list for nearly 150 weeks and counting. With more than 12 million copies in print, rights sold in thirty–eight countries to date, and relatable, addictive characters, this series is unstoppable. Now, in the eleventh and penultimate installment of the series, the action is more intense and the stakes even higher as Zoey and her friends battle to protect their school and home from devastating evil—all while balancing romances, precarious friendships and the daily drama of the House of Night’s halls.

This review has:

There were things I liked about this book and things I did not like about this book. What I did not like is a lot of the repetitiveness that is cropping up. We seem now to be going in circles with the actions and even the big things that people are doing. Including how in the end Zoey has a temper tantrum of horcrux like style and kills to guys. Sure they were creepy and preyed on little girls, but hello call the cops. It is a sad day in reading when you are starting to root for the very bad bad guy just because the kids are starting to get a little ridiculous.

Now one thing that I did like a lot was Kalona, he is really starting to come into his own as a character and be more then just the winged immortal. He has a soul has feelings and he truly is trying to get back on the good side of the Goddess. Watching his struggle is so very human and enjoyable. Maybe the fact that he is not a teenage brat is helpful as well because he you know acts like an adult.

Like many I have stuck with the series this long I am going to stick until the end, I just feel myself getting a bit happier that the end is very near now. Oh and for the record we really don’t learn as much about Neferet as they claim we will…at least nothing interesting.

Booking through Thursday 12/5/13

This one is Hosted at the Booking through Thursday Blog.

Well I waited til now and no new question yet for today. So since I did not do last weeks I thought I would use last week’s and will edit the post to include this weeks later when it gets posted. 🙂

Do you have a reading equivalent of holiday music to get you in the mood for the holiday season? Any books you make a point of reading this time of year?

I will be honest when it comes to this time of year I tend to be a bit of a scrooge and I have not read that many holiday themed books. That said I plan on reading a couple this year or at least one just to see if it helps me get more into the spirit of the season.

Musing Monday 12/2/13

Musing Monday is hosted over at Should Be Reading.

Musing Mondays asks you to muse about one of the following each week…

• Describe one of your reading habits.
• Tell us what book(s) you recently bought for yourself or someone else, and why you chose that/those book(s).
• Tell us what you’re reading right now — what you think of it, so far; why you chose it; what you are (or, aren’t) enjoying it.
• Do you have a bookish rant? Something about books or reading (or the industry) that gets your ire up? Share it with us!
• Instead of the above questions, maybe you just want to ramble on about something else pertaining to books — let’s hear it, then!

My muse this week is pretty easy and is more about book blogging then the books this week. sorry about that! But my last book review post (Hidden by PC cast) was my 1,000th blog post! So my muse is do you do anything to celebrate blog posts milestones? Follower milestones? Or do you just kind of ho hum see them go by?

Book Review: Hidden (House of Night #10) by P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast

At last, Zoey has what she wanted: the truth is out. Neferet’s evil has been exposed, and the High Council is no longer on her side — but she’s far from done wreaking havoc in the vampyre world. First, a mysterious fire ravages the stables. Then, Neferet makes a devastating move that will test them all.
With the seeds of distrust sown and Darkness breeding chaos at the House of Night, everyone must band together — but that’s proving to be more difficult than ever before. The twins are barely speaking and the House of Night’s former enemy, Kalona, has now become their warrior, pushing their trust to the limit. To top it off, Zoey is pretty darn sure she might be losing her mind. She saw something when she looked at Aurox through the Seer Stone that she can hardly explain to herself, let alone her friends. Is it possible that Heath has come back in a different form? Is that why Zoey’s so intrigued by Aurox, when it’s so obvious that he’s dangerous? And who would believe her if she told them? Zoey knows that following her instinct about Aurox might be just what they need to defeat evil . . . but if she’s wrong, it could cause the destruction of those closest to her.
With the tension at a breaking point and friendships on the line, can the nerd herd come together to stop the spread of Darkness before it’s too late?

Zoey and her gang just can not seem to catch a break on anything ever. Hidden is a really well written book and I enjoyed the action a great deal. While it seems Zoey and her group can not catch a break the flow and ebb of this one is really good. We spend a little bit more time getting to know some of the inner workings and more on the relationships then just battling evil. For me I really enjoyed that. I can say I did not like where Erin is going but of course it seems there has to be a split and a way of Shaunee to grow as well. Shaylin is a new and very curious character I can not wait to get to know her more and as if the cast wasn’t big enough Erebus actually shows up a few times and you know what he may be the “good one” but I don’t like him. Nope sure don’t.

I think any fan of this series is going to dig into the meat of this one. Light really takes a good stroke towards coming out on top against the evil Darkness that is Neferet. If only she would learn to leave Zoey her friends and Grandma alone!

“We are continuing in Goodwill what Neferet began only to create chaos and conflict. She opened this school to human employees. We are going to announce in the conference that, though we are sad to see Neferet leave our schools employ, we are happy to take job applications fro the community for more positions at the House of Night” ~ pg. 107 Hidden by PC and Kristin Cast

This week I am musing, and asking on what do you do with the books when you are done with them? I am actually also going to ask for electronic and hard copy. I admit in general I delete an electronic one when I am done with it. My theory for this is that it makes more room for others.

Hard copies well there is a variety of things I do with them, the biggest and most common is list them on Paperback Swap. I have a shelf that I keep all my paperback swap listed books on. If the shelf gets full and to many have not been picked out I donate them. Donating would be one of those other ones of course. Then there is what to do if the book is to old or to damaged, I have a couple of those. Those I re-purpose for crafts.
