THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION:If you could be best friends with an author, who would you choose and why?

For me this is a tough one there are so many different Authors that I like. That said I would pick Mark Twain. He is a relation on down the family line and I really love his books. I think it would be fun to talk to him about things and learn about his sense of humor in person.

THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: Have you ever accidentally destroyed a book? Such as accidentally dropped it in the tub, or run it over with a bike? How about accidentally on purpose or simply purposefully?

Before I go in and answer this weeks random question, I just want to say Thank you to everyone who has come over to this blog for the Musing Monday & Teaser Tuesday posts. I can admit I was a little nervous to take over, since the meme was so well established by a wonderful host. I am trying hard to be creative and make things fun and I appreciate everyone who posts. If you ever have any suggestions of questions you would like to see posted, feel free to drop me a line I will happily take submissions and give you credit unless you want to remain anonymous.

Now here we go about this weeks random question. I have sadly accidentally destroyed several books. I am glad to not have done so in a while, but oh many there was a period of time where I did it a lot I felt like a person bringing doom upon books. Just a few ways I accidentally destroyed books:

Dropped in tub

Dropped in snowbank

Dropped down an ice fishing hole

Dropped into the manure pile

Trampled by several horses

Dropped in camp fire

Dropped in pot of stew over camp fire

Yes..you read all of those right, lol. I hope the books can forgive me.

THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: Do you like new book smell? Old book smell? All book smell?

So this weeks question is rather random but it is something that I ponder frequently because I love old book smell. New books are nice too but there is just something more familiar and calming about the smell of old books to me. The lack of book smell was one reason that I did not jump onto the Kindle bandwagon when they first came out. Price was a factor too (is it me or were they way more expensive when they first came out? Like massively.) but it really did come down to the lack of book smell for me.

I still love walking into a used book store the smell is one of a kind. I will always pause and just enjoy that smell for a moment before I go on to continue my shopping. I often do the same thing when I walk into a library. I know they have tried to replicate that smell in candles and the like but for me it is never the same. Old book smell is one of a kind.

THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: If you could travel to one place you’ve read about in a book, what place would you visit and what book was it from?

I thought I would walk a little more on the creative side with the muse this week. I have been needing a little bit of a creative kick in the pants lately and this might be just the thing for me, I hope it is fun for you guys too. Books take us to different worlds, with different people and we can often see things we would never otherwise dream of. This is not only fantasy lands of course but times of the past and even modern times just with different jobs. A lot of the places I read about are dangerous but I still find that I would like to go there.

This is a question that for me will probably change depending on my mood or what I am currently reading. With that said I think right this moment if I had to pick I would like to go to the world of Harry Dresden. Harry lives in our world but of course it is a bit different. Harry gets to go and play with the Sidhe (okay not always that fun) and just some of the adventures he has seem fun even if they are dangerous. Besides, who wouldn’t want to get to talk to Bob the Skull? Or leave out pizza for toot toot the fairy. So, what world would you like to go to?

THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: Do you try out genres you have not liked in the past once in a while just to see if your taste changed?

This is actually something I have thought a lot about over the years as I Have seen where my reading likes go and how they change. When I was in high school I could not get enough of true crime style books I simply could not get enough of the Dr. Kay Scarpetta novels by Patricia Cornwell I think Blow fly was the last book of hers that I actually picked up and read though. I couldn’t read books by Nancy Taylor Rosenberg fast enough but I think Buried evidence was the last of her books that I picked up. I wouldn’t be caught dead reading romance. Now of course I enjoy romance, I still tend to be more in the historical area with it as that is where I started to enjoy it but I have found some urban romances that I like as well or books that I consider cross genre. So as we grow and experience different things in life our tastes change in things right?

I have always enjoyed Vampire Novels and that is one genre that I can say I still really love, but I feel as if it needs a new shot of adrenaline to it a really good story teller to draw me in again. Anne Rice was my icon for a while but Prince Lestat fell so flat for me I have not bothered to read the one released after it. Charlaine Harris was fun with the Southern Vampire Mysteries which turned into the popular show True Blood, but I feel she just slapped all her fans in the face with how she ended the series so that took some of the joy out of it. I am still working on the Anita Blake series, I was excited for a while but now the books are not holding my interest as much, it has become a bit serial. Anita gets beat up, men worry, Anita gets mad, Anita has more sexual partners then she thinks she should, Anita beats herself up over the morality of it. Anita kills some bad guys. Wash rinse repeat.

Urban Fantasy was not a genre I ever thought I could get into but I am complete obsessed with the Dresden series. So much so that I read the entire series back to back twice. So these days I am more open to poking at genres I used to like but no longer feel I do to see if maybe I find a way back to them. I am also more open to picking up books from genres I didn’t think were “me”, because you never know what you are gonna end up really enjoying. How about you?

THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: Are there any books you are really eagerly waiting for in 2017?

\

I used to keep on top of a lot of series books and releases and had lots of big marks on my calendar these days I really don’t. I have so many other things to keep on top of I don’t keep up with releases as often as I used to, that doesn’t mean I am not excited about books anymore I just can’t follow releases as much as I used to. That said there are a few that I do still get excited about and this year I am really hoping we see the new Dresden novel Peace Talks. I even admit that I compulsively check the website for updates.. lol

THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: What is your preferred reading format?

I am fairly sure that this has been asked before but it is on my mind today so it seemed to be all I could come up with, blame my one track mind perhaps. When the Kindle first came out on the market I admit I dug my heels in and I refused to get one. I wanted to stick with my hard copy books and only my hard copy books. I love the smell of books, the feel of them in your hands as you read. I still do tend to prefer the hard copy, but I am of course as seen by my whine about my broken kindle not so hard nosed about it anymore. The kindle has it’s place, it is more environmentally friendly of course, fantastic for vacation because you can have as many books as you want in the palm of your hand and for me of course there is the fact that I can have text to speech going while I am working on a crochet project. Of course it is hard to overlook all the fantastic deals that you can often find on kindle books. I think I will always prefer hard copy books as a matter of the memories they can bring forward and you can’t beat that great smell, but I do enjoy my kindle as well. So which do you prefer?

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: How do you make time for reading when you are very busy? Or how do you find a better balance between wanting to spend time reading and other commitments?

I have had this particular thought on my mind a lot lately and thought it would be interesting to see what others thought or do. I have been extremely busy the last few weeks with work. I have also had personal stuff but it is the work that has been keeping me from reading. This week especially I was not able to read at all. I feel like I cheated on my book by not reading it, lol. So hit me with you tips,  or just your muse.

Random little vent me and WordPress need to have a talk about it missing scheduled posts times, lol sorry it is a few hours behind what I planned this week!

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: What do you think about books being made into movies or tv shows and do you always read the book first?

With award season being upon us and as watching an interesting Golden Globes had me thinking about just how many movies and shows are made from books. The Night Manager took several awards (well done too) but the book was awesome. The Night Manager is one of those for me that it was really cool to see characters I already enjoyed coming alive. Jonathan Pine was such a complex character and Tom Hiddleston really did bring him to life for me. I was pleased to see he won a Golden Globe for it too, as did Hugh Laurie and Olivia Coleman.

So I know I have rambled on a little bit here, but I actually like most book to screen translations. Not all the time, of course, because sometimes they really do screw it up, but in general I do. I always try to read the book first there have been a few times I didn’t know it was based on a book until after so I went back and read the book. How about you?

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: Have you joined any challenges in reading for the new year? Do you have any general goals book or even not book related for 2017?

Welcome to the new year. I hope that everyone reading this will have a great year for this coming year. I know personally 2016 was a bit of a stinker for me.

I did manage to just barely hit my reading goal for 2016, but I did not end up posting all of the reviews for the books that I did read. Honestly, some of them were such stinkers they aren’t even worth the review, lol. I also managed to meet several of my other challenges, but I did not finish the Alphabet soup challenge or the British challenge.

I have joined several challenges again in 2017 and I am really hoping to hit them all this year. One of my goals in general for 2017 is to allow myself to be more rounded in how I spend my time. I used to have no problem hitting more than one book per week goals, but then I started to crochet and for the last several years have basically been doing crochet all the time. My Kindle can read to me and my audio books have been nice, but I need to start reading with my eyes again this year. So big goal is to make more time for other things again.

The 2017 reading challenges for me include:

52 books for the year
Witches and Witchcraft challenge
British book challenge
Alphabet soup challenge
Paranormal challenge
Mount TBR challenge
Historical reading challenge
YA reading challenge

I know this is a lot of challenges I am an addict, luckily I always make sure to join the ones that allow crossovers into other challenges. I am also giving some serious thought into creating my own reading challenge. I started thinking about it far too late to hit a 2017 challenge, but once I work through the details in my head, I might launch a “half year challenge” in the summer as a test to see if there is any interest for 2018.
