Do you write in your books? Highlight? In all books or just things like college textbooks?

No I don’t. Not in any book at all. Not in a text book not in any book. I just I can’t I see it as marring the book. I may put post its in the book with notes about things I need to remember or reference later. That is as far as I will go. I know there are many people who go ahead and write or highlight in books but the idea of it always makes me cringe.

I am not even kidding one of my loved ones once purposely sat and highlighted in a book just to watch me twitch, he thought it was very funny. I on the other hand was ready to grab the book from him and run away with it before he could cause it anymore harm.

Do you own fewer books than you used to? More?

Or do you find the quantity in your library stays pretty much the same from year to year?

(And yes, digital and audio books DO count.)

Well if we are counting digital books then I have way more then I used to. My hard copy books tend to stay about the same because I have the same space for them. Sometimes it jumps up a bit when I clear some space, but with how much I have been focused on yarn and crochet that has not happened as much. My digital library however, well there is no spacial limits on that right? So I have a lot and I keep getting more. I can’t help myself. I especially love the text to speech function on my current Fire. Seems to make it easier to do my favorite thing, multi tasking.

There was not one for this first week in 2016 so I picked one I missed in 2015: What is it about reading that makes you most thankful?

Everything about the process of reading makes me happy and thankful. I am thankful that I can read, there are people out there who can’t for a variety of reasons. I am thankful I make time to read. I am thankful for a good story and I am thankful for the relaxation it gives me.

What book (or books) from your childhood do you think about most often? That had the most effect on your life?

Gads, I read so many books when I was younger so it is hard to remember them all. With that said, there are some that were indeed standing out for me. The first being the Three Billy Goats Gruff. This was the very first book I can remember reading and the copy I had was very old at the time I got it. I think it was my Great Grandma Doris’s copy, but I could be wrong about that. It is a story I still love today.

Next would have to be Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer of course. These were the first books that I can fully remember wanting to crawl inside and live in the world for a time. The adventures and the history I just loved it! Oh yes, sure some course language and stuff that is still not polite to say today but the stories were wonderful. On top of that to those who poo poo about the language, yes, it is bad, however, Huck Finn goes against the general mind set of the day with Jim. He loves Jim, Jim is his friend so there.

Next up would be the entire Black Stallion series for me. Another set of books that I wanted to crawl inside of because I wanted to have The Black! I also wanted to have Flame! Now that I am writing about it, I want to read the series again, I can see my first 2016 challenge for myself on the horizon! The Black Stallion series truly cemented my deep love of the Arabian horse. They are such stunning animals and will always be my favorite.

Last but not least I will say Trinity. I know I have mentioned it before and I know I just re-read it again recently there is a reason for that. This was my first very adult very graphic novel and it will stay with me forever. The struggle that goes on in Trinity, the nitty gritty detail of the Irish trying to fight for survival and freedom. It is just an emotional experience. It was not the blood and gore that stuck with me, but the emotion and feeling, the struggle. Really plucked something inside of me.

So there you have my BTT answer hope it did not bore you.

A little late again but here we go.

Do you have people you can talk to about books you’ve read? Share delight in plot twists, explore how much fun it was, or how badly written?

I do have people I can talk about books with. Some are more enthusiastic then others about it but they do listen either way. I love when I can share a book I have read with someone who has also read it. I love being able to see what we agree on and what we disagree on within the books.

What do non-reader friends think about your reading habits? Do they understand? Are they sympathetic? Or are they always trying to get you to “get your nose out of that book?

I don’t have to many non-reader friends because I met a lot of my current friends in book groups. That said however, those who I do have which are not readers are confused by the habit. They never try to get me to stop reading (or crocheting) but they don’t understand reading. My Ex didn’t read much and so he also didn’t have any understanding of why I enjoyed it so much and what I got out of it.

What magazines do you subscribe to? Personal ones? Professional ones?

Or do you only/mostly pick up your periodicals at the newsstand?

How do you feel about digital editions versus print?

Do you save the old copies after you read them? Or promptly recycle them?

This is an interesting question. So here we go

I currently subscribe to Cosmo, Glamor and Better Homes and garden. These are clearly personal. I want to subscribe to a crochet magazine but I want to find just the right one. I am sure I will though just gotta keep hitting the craft shop and looking at what they offer.

I get my magazines by subscription because they are cheaper that way. If it is a new one I will get it at the news stand to check out before committing.

Sometimes I save old copies it just depends.

What new book would make you spring out of your chair and run to the bookstore? (Or library, or nearest computer screen, depending on your book-delivery-method of choice.)

None have in a while, although if I was caught up on the Black Dagger Brotherhood I would do that one. However when the new Harry Dresden comes out….I will be leaping up for that.

Two part question:

In an ideal world, what kind of book cases would you have? Built-ins? Barrister ones with glass doors? The cheapest you could find so you could have lots of them?

And … what kind of bookcases do you REALLY have?

In an ideal world I would have fully inbuilt to the wall book cases. Like an elaborate old english library. That would make me happy in an ideal world.

Presently I have a mish mash variety of book cases including my closet.

Do you prefer to read collections that are all of works by the same author? Or collections by different writers? Consistency or variety?

I am about both! I love to read a good long series by an author I enjoy, I mean I spent most of last year reading Harry Dresden, I love the Cynster series by Stephanie Laurens, The Cousins wars by Phillipa Gregory…The Pink Carnation series by Lauren Willig..the Lady Emily series by Tasha Alexander..bottom line for me is Both. I love when an Author I enjoy does a good series because I can settle in and know I am going to enjoy characters but I also like to find new authors. Nothing makes me sadder then when a series I love suddenly takes a bad turn and gets…not so great. sadly that happened with the Blue Blood novels for me.
