Book Review: Phi Beta Bimbo by Trish Jensen

Leah Smith, a lifelong nerd, conducts research for her doctoral disseration on women in the workplace by disguising herself as a sexy employee. The experiment should prove who fares better in the workplace: the brassy bimbo or the plain Jane. Matters get complicated when Mark Colson, the company security specialist, thinks she is a corporate spy… more » posing as two different women.

I was not sure I would like this book when I picked it up but I thought I should at least give it a fair shake it seemed funny. I am very glad I did give it a fair shake the book was hilarious. Now while some of the events taking place were a bit unbelievable the story itself was still fun. Following the love and business of a family and their friends and the relationships they build is a great ride.

If you’re looking for a fun quick read this book will do that for you. It is a fun light and airy chic lit book and Trish Jensen does a great job. This one actually had me wishing that there was another one to find out what happens with Mark and Leah, and Gramps and all the other fun little characters you meet in this book. To be sure it is not a book that is full of tons of thinking and plot twists, it is just good fun.

Book Review: Straight Talking by Jane Green

Meet Tasha?single and still searching. A producer for Britain?s most popular morning show working under a nightmare boss, Tash is well-versed in the trials and tribulations of twenty-first century dating. She and her three best friends certainly haven?t lived the fairy tale they thought they would: there?s Andy, who?s hooked on passion, but too … more »much of a tomboy to have moved much beyond the beer-drinking contest stage; Mel, stuck in a steady but loveless relationship; and Emma, endlessly waiting for her other half to propose. Their love lives are only complicated by the sort of men who seem to drift in and out: Andrew?suave, good-looking and head over heels in love . . . with himself; Simon, who is allergic to commitment but has a bad-boy nature that?s impossible to resist; and Adam?perfectly attractive, but too sweet to be sexy.

The bestselling first novel that launched Jane Green, one of the brightest stars in contemporary women?s fiction, Straight Talking sets the record straight regarding the real world of dating, and follows the adventures of Tash and her friends as they search for fulfillment and the right kind of love. Funny, flirty, and ultimately tender, Straight Talking gets at the heart of modern romance

Jane Green is one of the wittiest authors I know of. Maybe it is just because I latch onto British humor more than I do my homelands but what can I say I really do enjoy her writing style. Straight talking follows the life of Tasha a producer in television who is no different than the rest of us. She has had her ups and downs, had a man break her heart, dated and dated again. Waited by the phone that never rings, who hasn’t done that a time or two?

This book is as with the others fantastically written and very cheeky. While I admit I could see the writing on the wall with Adam well before the big reveal, I think it was set up so we could see it that way. She wanted us as the reader to see what Tasha couldn’t, and still couldn’t until she lost what she had. Straight talking attacks the age old adage you don’t know what you got till it’s gone. I won’t tell you what happens because that of course would ruin the book, but I recommend this one to read. If you like chic lit you will like this book, if your new to chic lit I still think you will like this book.

Book Review: Bergdorf Blondes by Plum Skyes

Plum Sykes burst on to the literary scene in 2004 with her beguiling debut novel introducing readers to the glamorous world of PAPs (Park Avenue Princesses) and her loveable heroine, Moi, a “champagne bubble of a girl” who became an instant hit with readers from coast to coast.

I am sorry it took me so many years after publication for me to find this book. The Bergdorf Blondes is a really wonderful romp through socialite New York. The book follows the point of view of Moi, with her friends Julie Bergdorf (the queen bee of society), Lara and Jolene and may others. At some parts you want to laugh and ask yourself can anyone really be this shallow. They abbreviate everything including the word PH for potential husband. But, at the end of the day you really just do have to laugh about it.

Moi takes us not only into the world of the fashion obsessed “Princesses of Park Avenue” but through a series of her own very poor relationship mistakes. There is Zach, the moody depressing photographer who treats her like crap, who she almost marries. Eduardo the married, with children prince from some where or another, Patrick the married man with the psycho wife. And of course the very “regrettable” Charlie Dulain, who is Julie’s boy friend, or so she thought. You will get a few curve balls you didn’t see coming in this fun little run around the world, from New York to Rio and back again. I recommend reading this one if you want something easy, and something to lighten your mood.

Book Review: Six Reasons to Stay a Virgin by Louise Harwood

Emily, London’s famous twenty-four-year-old virgin, has to wonder if it’s really so crazy to wait for Mr. Right. To enjoy the anticipation. To make sure she’s totally, truly, no-turning-back in love. Especially when her friends fall in and out of lust on a daily basis. But Emily gets the surprise of her life when Oliver Mills comes back to town after a year in America. When they were sixteen, she and Oliver made out behind some sand dunes at the beach, and deep down, he’s the one she’s been waiting for all this time. Already, Emily can feel her defenses crumbling. She’s got six good reasons to stay a virgin. But six might not be enough.

Not really a great book to me. I didnt think it was that funny, and over all the main character was just a bit to odd. Her friends were all a bit overwhelming with the either, deep need to take care of her. Or completely not careing about her. Overall I wouldnt reccomend this one unless you have nothing else to read.

Book Review: Babyville By Jane Green

Meet Julia, a wildly successful television producer who appears to have the picture-perfect life. But beneath the surface, things are not as perfect as they seem. Stuck in a loveless relationship with her boyfriend, Mark, Julia thinks a baby is the answer . . . but she may want a baby more than she wants her boyfriend. Maeve, on the other hand, is allergic to commitment. A feisty, red-haired, high-power career girl, she breaks out in a rash every time she passes a stroller. But when her no-strings-attached nightlife leads to an unexpected pregnancy, her reaction may be just as unexpected . . . And then there’s Samantha-happily married and eager to be the perfect June Cleaver mother. But baby George brings only exhaustion, extra pounds, and marital strife to her once tidy life. Is having an affair with a friend’s incredibly sexy husband the answer? With Babyville, bestselling author Jane Green applies her golden touch to the next phase of a girl’s life. By turns witty, rollicking, and tender, this sparkling, sexy tale about the complexities of modern motherly love isn’t really a story about babies-it’s about three friends whose lives are suddenly turned upside down by that life-changing event that hangs over the head of every single girl: motherhood.

A wonderful story about life. Sometimes what you think you need, you don’t. What you think you don’t need you do! Life throws things at you and your left to deal with them. This story mingles with several women, their lives all intersect, and yet are separate. Babies, Husbands, and New York Oh my! I had fun with this one, though it did take me a little bit to get into it. But if you sit down, by chapter three you do really want to know what’s going to happen. The characters are likeable and engaging.

Book Review: Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella

Rebecca Bloomwood just hit rock bottom. But she’s never looked better….Becky Bloomwood has a fabulous flat in London’s trendiest neighborhood, a troupe of glamorous socialite friends, and a closet brimming with the season’s must-haves. The only trouble is that she can’t actually afford it — not any of it. Her job writing at Successful Savings not only bores her to tears, it doesn’t pay much at all. And lately Becky’s been chased by dismal letters from Visa and the Endwich Bank — letters with large red sums she can’t bear to read — and they’re getting ever harder to ignore. She tries cutting back; she even tries making more money. But none of her efforts succeeds. Becky’s only consolation is to buy herself something … just a little something….Finally a story arises that Becky actually cares about, and her front-page article catalyzes a chain of events that will transform her life — and the lives of those around her — forever.

Wow! I can not believe it took me so long to read this book. This book is hilarious! A wonderful chic lit book. I could not help but laugh out loud, as much of this book. Poor Rebecca gets herself in over her head. She gets in a financial bind, that some of us might be familiar with. And ends up with way more stuff than she really needs! But in the end. through the course of things..she finds a way to make right. And learns some hard life lessons. This really is a fun enjoyable book. A fast read that makes you not want to put it down. I look forward to reading the rest of the series, and to see the movie.

Book Review: High Maitenance by Jennifer Belle

Liv Kellerman has left her cheating husband-and more tragically, their fabulous duplex with Empire State Building views. Now she’s contemplating her next move. With few marketable skills, a lot of appeal, and more than a little attitude, she can go farther than she ever thought possible.

This book was interesting. Its said to be funny, I didn’t find it all that funny. BUT it was fun. Its a crazy romp around new York city with a newly divorced young woman. she gets involved with a very WEIRD man, but than finds the strength to not feel she has to depend on a man. That she has her own strength. Over all this was a fast read and a fun little romp. I would recommend it to someone wanting to shake their head at some wacky scenes.

Book Review: They’re Not Your Friends By Irene Zutell

Charlotte “Lottie” Love has a thing for celebrity. Actually, it’s more of an obsession. All her life she’s lurked in the shadows of Hollywood, desperate to step into the light. When she lands a job at Personality magazine, her dreams of red-carpet strolls, popping flashbulbs, and the attention of white-hot heartthrobs finally start to come true. Even Hollywood’s latest “It” boy falls for her, and everyone wants his story. Can Lottie score the scoop? Ask Lem Brac, a British boozehound in the twilight of a mediocre career who knows an exclusive with the It boy would save his job. Lem looks for help from his new (and only) friend—Mike Posner, a young hotshot reporter just hired away from a New York tabloid. But Mike has some damaging secrets himself that are about to surface. He needs the interview too, and it’s anyone’s guess how far he’ll go to get it.Welcome to the world of entertainment journalism and star worship, where you’re only as good as the gossip you dig up. Written by a former People magazine correspondent who knows the underbelly of Hollywood hearsay all too well, They’re Not Your Friends slips past the velvet rope and grants access to a wickedly funny—and sometimes scary—celebrity magazine scene.

This book is different from what I usually read. But the story line stuck out at me on the back as something that might be fun. So I thought why not? And while it started out a bit slow, it became a very enjoyable and fun read for me. The story followed Charlotte “Lottie” Love a valley girl from Tarzana, CA on her career path. We follow her as she goes from a nobody, to a vain glorified Pappo..and finally finding herself with the man who she thought she hated.

There is a lot of name dropping of big name celebrities, and that makes the book even more fun.Kind of like reading a Tabloid magazine, you know its not true but you just cant help yourself. We follow a fun cast of characters around Lottie that you love, hate, and love again. So over all if your looking for a fast, and amusing read that gives you a chuckle. With plenty of people mooning, and flashing in drunken stupors, give this one a shot.
