I couldn’t settle one just one teaser this week. I have a lot going on in my mind lately and these seemed to really resound as I settled in to try and pick a teaser. So I have decided to share both of them this week.

THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: Have you ever read a book that changed your life?

As book lovers we all have books special to us. Maybe it is one that made us fall in love with reading or one that holds special memories. One thing I have not heard anyone talk about often is a book that literally changed their life, changed how they looked at the world. Have you ever had a book like that? I feel like in the fact that I have had a couple of books change things in my life. One of those was Good Grief by Lolly Winston. There was something about that book that reached into me and just shook my core. I can’t really explain it in words but I know it was a life changing book. It is one that I need to go back and read again now that my life has indeed changed so much and see if I can find a way to say how it made me feel better. So how about you?

THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: What do you do with your non keeper hard copy books?

Hello October! Isn’t the year just flying by? I know it is for me! Whew! So I am sure as book fans we all still have some hard copy, I have a lot really but what do you do with them when you are done? I try to be strict with how many books I actually keep on hand so you have to be a really really good book to get on my hard copy keeper shelf. I used to swap all my books out over on paperback swap. I have not been active over there to much lately so my last batch of books I no longer needed was dropped off at the FOL sale. How about you?

I should be finishing this one up today and it has been interesting to re-read this one. It’s a different book then others I have been reading as of late.

THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: Do you like book clubs or not?

I have for many years looked at ways to get myself out of my anxiety a bit more and find more friends. Finding friends with a common interest always seemed like a great plan, so of course book clubs came to mind right? When I was still home in Minnesota I was happy to be a member of the PBS local chapters. A book club of sorts but there was not required reading for meet ups, we just shared what we were currently reading and other things both book and life related. Sadly when I left Minnesota I lost that core group of people and have not found another local chapter to join since.

I have looked at other book clubs through various places like meetup and the library. The biggest problem I seem to have is when I look at past or current reads most of the groups arent reading something I would normally be drawn too. Now that isn’t to say I won’t give new books a chance but when it is month after month I get worried. I don’t consider myself a super picky reader but do have my genres that I feel most comfortable in. So far it is that which has kept me from joining any groups again. Maybe I am being to narrow minded. So how about you? Do you like book clubs or do you feel a bit scared off by the general choices in reading in them?

Tuesday again and isn’t it nice? I wish I was in Phoenix in the heavenly bed really haha, but one must keep on with regular life right? The BBC is showing this soon and I can’t wait so I decided to re-read the book.

THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION: Do you like something playing in the background while reading?

First I want to just thank everyone who comes to my blog and takes part in Musing Monday & Teaser Tuesday. I know I have not always been active in replying (and I am making a vow today to get better at that!) but I do read every comment that comes through and I do visit the links left. I must confess that it is my social anxiety that has kept me from interacting as much as I want too. It has been pretty bad lately, tends to be worse when there are other stressors going on. It is not an excuse of course but I felt that I should share that is what causes it, I feel that is the first step to doing better and working through that social anxiety because all of you are wonderful and of course we all have at least one thing in common a love of books!

Now, with the mushy stuff out of the way a reply to last weeks muse gave me the inspiration for this one. Unless you are listening to an audio or have kindle reading to you, reading a book generally requires that you sit in one spot and only do that right? For some reason I feel like having the TV on in the background or some music makes it less “lazy”. I don’t know why that works for my brain but I guess it makes me feel more like I am multi tasking when I have something going on in the background. Yet I know people who much prefer to have silence when they read. So which do you prefer?

Book Review: The Life She Was Given by Ellen Marie Wiseman

From acclaimed author Ellen Marie Wiseman comes a vivid, daring novel about the devastating power of family secrets–beginning in the poignant, lurid world of a Depression-era traveling circus and coming full circle in the transformative 1950s.

On a summer evening in 1931, Lilly Blackwood glimpses circus lights from the grimy window of her attic bedroom. Lilly isn’t allowed to explore the meadows around Blackwood Manor. She’s never even ventured beyond her narrow room. Momma insists it’s for Lilly’s own protection, that people would be afraid if they saw her. But on this unforgettable night, Lilly is taken outside for the first time–and sold to the circus sideshow.

More than two decades later, nineteen-year-old Julia Blackwood has inherited her parents’ estate and horse farm. For Julia, home was an unhappy place full of strict rules and forbidden rooms, and she hopes that returning might erase those painful memories. Instead, she becomes immersed in a mystery involving a hidden attic room and photos of circus scenes featuring a striking young girl.

At first, The Barlow Brothers’ Circus is just another prison for Lilly. But in this rag-tag, sometimes brutal world, Lilly discovers strength, friendship, and a rare affinity for animals. Soon, thanks to elephants Pepper and JoJo and their handler, Cole, Lilly is no longer a sideshow spectacle but the circus’s biggest attraction. . .until tragedy and cruelty collide. It will fall to Julia to learn the truth about Lilly’s fate and her family’s shocking betrayal, and find a way to make Blackwood Manor into a place of healing at last.

Moving between Julia and Lilly’s stories, Ellen Marie Wiseman portrays two extraordinary, very different women in a novel that, while tender and heartbreaking, offers moments of joy and indomitable hope.

First, I want to say thank you to Net Galley for letting me have an early copy of this book so I could review it.

The life she was given is a beautifully written story that spans generations, lives and shows what happens when families keep secrets. There are events in the book that are simply horrifying, but at the same time you can’t look away because the book holds your attention. This is a story that while I know it is fiction (some loosely based on real events) it is one that could be nonfiction, someone sharing the story of their family.

Lilly and Julia are both amazing characters that are well fleshed out and I could see them as I traveled back and forth between their stories. The change ups were nice and happened just about every chapter giving the book a smooth and easy rhythm that I appreciated. Some books that split between more than one POV can be very clunky and turn me off because I can’t settle into the story.

Life in the circus was not a good one back in the era this story is told in. Animal rights were pretty much nothing and rights for people not much better. Yet within the horror and the trauma, there is still love and hope to be found. That was the message that came out the strongest to me and it is a message I was happy to see in our world today that seems to be getting darker.

The only thing that kept me from making this one five stars is that for all its wonder and how good it was the story felt a little too close to Water for Elephants for me. I know it is not the same book and that often books set in the same time period risk being similar but there were certain parts I felt could have been directly inserted into Water for Elephants and not be noticed. That being said, the book is still a beautiful work that does tell its own story. So I would highly recommend you give this book a chance if you can because it is a story that will stay with you.

Who is a space case and never went back and updated her teaser last week? LOL This girl. Little mini vacation was lovely though, once we got there. On the way both front tires of my car blew, on a 75mph zone two lane highway at 9pm on a holiday weekend. Did you know that some cars have locking lug nuts? I didn’t. I have roadside assistance but thanks to the locking lug nuts and lack of key they couldn’t help other then calling a tow truck. Cutting a long story short ended up renting a car to make the 2 hour drive to see David Cook & Idina Menzel. At least the hotel as always was a dream, highly reccomend you treat yourself to The Westin sometimes the beds alone….heavenly.

I digress….it is Teaser Tuesday not long tale Tuesday, lol.

Here is the teaser from my current read.
