Do you have any particular “quirks” when it comes to reading? (eg. taking notes while reading, etc)

Well of course I have some, doesn’t everyone? I like to have a little something to nibble on while I am reading, a drink and I prefer to read in bed or outside in a nice chair. I also really prefer to have a couple of my fur kids with me. There is just something about being like that when reading which let’s me relax fully and enjoy.

What were your favorite books of 2015?
How many books did you read last year? Are you happy with the amount of reading you got done? Wish you’d had more time?

My favorite books of 2015 were again the Dresden Files, I know I read them in both 2014 and 2015 but that is because of how good they are. I read a total of 45 books which was not an amount I was happy with. However, when I think of everything else I did in 2015 and all the busy over all I think 45 books was not bad. I do wish I had more time to read! I could use a whole 24 hour period a week to just read. It won’t happen of course but one can dream.

I decided that I wanted to share one of the books I am currently reading this week. This one is one I have been waiting for a couple months via the library hold system. It was finally made open to me via audio file so audio file it is.

SalemWitches

The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Cleopatra, the #1 national bestseller, unpacks the mystery of the Salem Witch Trials.

It began in 1692, over an exceptionally raw Massachusetts winter, when a minister’s daughter began to scream and convulse. It ended less than a year later, but not before 19 men and women had been hanged and an elderly man crushed to death.

The panic spread quickly, involving the most educated men and prominent politicians in the colony. Neighbors accused neighbors, parents and children each other. Aside from suffrage, the Salem Witch Trials represent the only moment when women played the central role in American history. In curious ways, the trials would shape the future republic.

As psychologically thrilling as it is historically seminal, THE WITCHES is Stacy Schiff’s account of this fantastical story-the first great American mystery unveiled fully for the first time by one of our most acclaimed historians.

There was not one for this first week in 2016 so I picked one I missed in 2015: What is it about reading that makes you most thankful?

Everything about the process of reading makes me happy and thankful. I am thankful that I can read, there are people out there who can’t for a variety of reasons. I am thankful I make time to read. I am thankful for a good story and I am thankful for the relaxation it gives me.

Book Review: At the King’s Pleasure (Secrets of the Tudor Court #4) by Kate Emerson

At the King’s Pleasure is the fourth novel in Kate Emerson’s well-reviewed series set in Tudor England—based on a real life member of the royal court of Henry VIII.

Following the acclaimed By Royal Decree, Pleasure Palace, and Between Two Queens, Kate Emerson again plucks a real figure from history in this lushly detailed tale featuring Lady Anne Stafford—who is torn between her husband and another man.

History remembers Lady Anne Stafford as the woman who cheated on her husband with both King Henry VIII and his companion, Sir William Compton. Lady Anne was indeed in love with two men at the same time….but the king wasn’t one of them. Lady Anne’s complex and heart-wrenching romantic relationships are at the core of this riveting tale that masterfully blends romance, drama, and historical detail as only Kate Emerson can.

A new year and finally finishing up a book that I started last year. For some reason I just could not get attached to this one last year in 2015. I got through it pretty fast this time around and I think I was having so much trouble before because it just was not as engaging as the other reads. Now with that said it was not a bad read at all.

Once again, you are in the court of a Young King Henry. This time the story revolves around the younger versions of key players to come out at court later, like the Boleyn’s and others. The main character is Lady Anne Stafford, the infamous adulterer who cuckolded her Husband with both the King himself and his boon companion Sir William Compton. The characters were fun, but some of the dialogue for me fell a little flat. Things came across as more vapid than in other books and I am not sure if this was on purpose or just how things came across but I didn’t like it.

The characters seemed to fly off the handle and have toddler tantrums more in this book than others as well. It was dramatic, of course, but sometimes a little off putting. Aside from all of that I did enjoy the book on a whole. It is once again a different look at the history of things and gives us a different side of everything that went on. Yes of course it is fiction, but it is very plausible fiction. I felt for Lady Anne and she did get dealt a bad hand on many occasions. Overall this is a good read and I am happy that I read it, overall it fits in well with the series so far.

“Charlotte!” In the mad crush of the Queen’s drawing room Lady Uppington maneuvered her hoops expertly around a broad skirt and protruding sword to embrace Charlotte.”Your Grandmother told me you were at court.” Charlotte smiled shyly at her best friends Mother. “I’m waiting on the Queen,” she said unnecessarily. pg. 158 Temptation of the Night Jasmine by Lauren Willig

Random weekly question: What has been your most favorite book, so far, this year? Why?

This is a tough one because I have been doing a lot of re-reading this year for various reasons. Research for work and enjoyment being the biggest two reasons. If I enjoy a book well enough to re-read it even for work that means it is in one of my favorite piles already. If I picked just one I will go with The Help which I just finished recently. I have loved the movie since it came out but it was one of the few books that I read after I saw the movie. You is smart, you is kind and you is important.

Random question: What do you do when you finish a book? Do you immediately start another one?

Most often yes I do indeed start a new book once I finish one. However, lately I will only end up reading a page or two then set it aside so I can do some crochet work. The only way this does not apply is if I am listening on Audio. The last two years I have blazed through the Dresden series on audio while crocheting and I do not regret it. I love spending time with Dresden!

New Year new challenges

I admit the end of the year got very busy for me. So I did not even go through and tally how I did on my challenges for last year. Bottom line is I know I did not complete some but when prepping for my 2016 I saw I did complete more then I first thought. I am okay with that. I still read quite a bit and I had other things that I got done. I did not get many reviews written though so THAT is something that I wish to be better at. So that will be my biggest goal for 2016 to make sure my reviews for the books I have read are written. I also plan on back tracking for the 2015 books that need to be reviewed.

Without further waiting however, here are my challenges for 2016 hopefully I do better on them this year.

**The website for this one has not updated yet I hope it will soon or I may cut it and add to my other Historical challenge*

As always you can see my Book Challenges on the Page for the . Happy 2016 everyone!

See you in 2016

Alas I have to admit this has been another year where my reading has not gone as well as I planned it too. It has been a year of up and down and while I have read quite a lot I have not really completed most of my challenges. I have not posted as many reviews as I had hoped or wished either.

However, as I said at the out start of this while I wanted to do challenges I knew I would be very busy with some big changes in life and may not complete them. So I have accepted that! With that said I am going to be putting this blog on hiatus until just after New year. With this the first day of December I still have a great deal of work to do for Christmas.

I make most of my gifts by hand and do so with a great deal of love and attention to detail. I started late this year so it means I am behind and taking time out to catch up on my reviews here is just something that can wait. So I shall see my readers of this blog in 2016! I will do my challenge round up then and I will catch up on reviews. As well of course as getting signed up for the 2016 challenges. Yes I do plan on trying again!

I will find balance between work, family life and reading one of these days! I shall!
