Book Review: My Own Mr. Darcy by Karey White

After being dragged to the 2005 movie Pride and Prejudice by her mother, sixteen-year-old Elizabeth’s life changes when Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Darcy appears on the screen. Lizzie falls hard and makes a promise to herself that she will settle for nothing less than her own Mr. Darcy. This ill-advised pledge threatens to ruin any chance of finding true love. During the six intervening years, she has refused to give any interested suitors a chance. They weren’t Mr. Darcy enough. Coerced by her roommate, Elizabeth agrees to give the next interested guy ten dates before she dumps him. That guy is Chad, a kind and thoughtful science teacher and swim coach. While she’s dating Chad, her dream comes true in the form of a wealthy bookstore owner named Matt Dawson, who looks and acts like her Mr. Darcy. Of course she has to follow her dream. But as Elizabeth simultaneously dates a regular guy and the dazzling Mr. Dawson, she’s forced to re-evaluate what it was she loved about Mr. Darcy in the first place.

I have personally always loved reading books that carry on the Jane Austen themes especially Mr. Darcy so of course I had high hopes for this book and read. Luckily My Own Mr. Darcy by Karey White does not let a reader down. It is a fun and modern romp in the land of Austen. If you like good, fun romance with that typical Mr. Darcy type leading man you are going to enjoy this book, yes some of it is a little predictable because it follows a format but the book is well written.

Overall this is just a cute and enjoyable read. Sometimes you may want to swat the main Lady Elizabeth but really I can not name a single romantic character I have not wanted to do the same for. If you like romance, and you love Jane Austen I would give My. Own Mr. Darcy a read it is a fast fun one.

Book Review: Dragonwich

Who Will Dare to Face the Dragonwitch?

Submissive to her father’s will, Lady Leta of Aiven travels far to meet a prospective husband she neither knows nor loves–Lord Alistair, future king of the North Country.

But within the walls of Gaheris Castle, all is not right. Vicious night terrors plague Lord Alistair to the brink of insanity. Whispers rise from the family crypt. The reclusive castle Chronicler, Leta’s tutor and friend, possesses a secret so dangerous it could cost his life and topple the North Country into civil war.

And far away in a hidden kingdom, a fire burns atop the Temple of the Sacred Flame. Acolytes and priestesses serve their goddess to the limits of their lives and deaths. No one is safe while the Dragonwitch searches for the sword that slew her twice…and for the one person who can wield it.

I was not aware that this was part of a series when I signed up for the tour, but I am so glad that it is. I am now going to go back and read the others. That said Dragonwich can stand on it’s own feet and is a book apart. The story is deep and entrancing and takes you on an adventure as you flip through each page. There were moments when I thought I had it all figured out, and then I was shown that I really did not know anything at all. This is one of the better Fantasy reads that I have read all summer.

Fields of Elysium by A.B. Whelan

How can love mend a heart full of hate?

Small town girl, Molly Bennett, moves to Los Angeles where she becomes an outsider while attending Beverly Hills High School. It seems life cannot be any more dreadful. Then one day after school, something magical happens. On a secluded hike in the Hollywood Hills, Molly chases her disobedient mutt and only friend into a hidden cavern. She stumbles upon a strange glimmering gateway that transports her to Arkana, a planet that is the cradle of an advanced human race. There, teenagers navigate amazing flying vehicles, compete in perilous games for glory, and possess supernatural powers. While Molly tries to wrap her mind around this unbelievable discovery, she meets the alluring and mysterious Victor Sorren. He is a Sentinel Apprentice, whose hatred toward people from Earth is beyond understanding. Yet every time Victor unpredictably saves Molly’s life, his heart draws closer to hers, no matter how much he tries to fight against it. It further complicates things that their growing friendship is strictly forbidden. Earth people are prohibited in Arkana, yet Molly continues to cross through the portal to Arkana to see Victor. Torn between their double lives, they go down a dangerous path, from where there is no return and multiple endings.

Fields of Elysium is a suspenseful, romantic tale full of forbidden secrets, unimaginable danger, deception, and the never-ending fight for true love.

PRAISE

“The novel’s take on otherworldly travel is a compelling one, and the romantic plot will likely appeal to Twilight fans.” – Kirkus Reviews

“I expected a good love story with a paranormal twist. I got so much more. I think you should take the chance and read it. Let this book take you on the adventure, fall in love.” – Young Adult and Teen Readers

“Fields of Elysium is a fabulous read. … Whelan paints her faith into the fabric of her story with deft, light brushstrokes, making her work accessible to all, no matter their spiritual beliefs or background.” – Readers Favorite

“I escaped into this fantasy world, author, A.B.Whelan, created and I didn’t want Molly to go. From detailed descriptions, to sweet romance, and to all the twist and turns in the story, it had me captivated from page one.” – Mary Ting, author of the Crossroads Saga

“Whelan’s writing is very vivid and descriptive. It’s more formal than the average YA novel, but I enjoyed the lyrical and mesmerizing quality to it. I thought the overall story read like a fairy tale–very sweet.” – Megan Thomason, author of Daynight

My Review:

Okay so the first thing I have to say about this one is I really dislike that Kirkus makes the broad statement that fans of Twilight will like this one. It is not like Twilight At all. Not even a little bit. That said..that is Kirkus and not the book itself. So the book itself.

Fields of Elysium is a very enjoyable romp in the world of paranormal romance. Molly the main character discovers a wormhole that takes her to another planet and while she is there she meets a group of teenage boys. The time on the planet of Arkana passes 5 times faster then it does on earth so Molly can go between the two worlds and not seem to be gone to long from Earth at all. The story reads well and it is obvious that most of the characters are very well thought out and well developed.

The only reason this book does not get a 5 gem review from me is because I think that Molly and Victor switched feelings for each other way to fast. First they instantly hate one another and then they love one another. It goes a little to fast and could have used a little more detail. Otherwise the book was enjoyable and I would recommend it as a good entertaining and fast read.

Her first story “The Invisible Alien Watcher” was published by Micro Horror in 2009 and reprinted by Pill Hill Press in 2011. This was a Unique read for me and the first one of it’s style that I have taken on. I enjoyed the read and I think Kia Garriques has created a very nice and enjoyable novel. It was a fast read with intense characters and twists. I am still sticking my foot gingerly into the pool with this genre but if all of my reads can come out like this one I will be getting into it a lot faster for sure. I would recommend this one for friends to read if they want a fast pace intense book.

Book Review: Silver Sphere by Michael Dadich

Shelby Pardow never imagined killing someone. That’s about to change.

While hiding from her troubled father in the local library, Shelby stares at a flashing instant message on her computer: YOU ARE NEEDED. She discovers a portal that opens and teleports her to the planet Azimuth, where soldiers await. Here, she is not a child but a warrior, Kin to one of the six Aulic Assembly members imprisoned by Malefic Cacoethes, the daunting leader of the Nightlanders.

Malefic, the evil spawn of the demon Biskara, razes towns and cities in his quest to rule Azimuth, and yearns to turn his forces against Earth. Yet every time Biskara gets close to achieving his malevolent goals, the Assembly uses the Silver Sphere, a sophisticated armillary device, to thwart him.

With the Assembly deposed, Biskara directing Malefic’s conquests, and the Silver Sphere out of reach, Shelby is thrust into an unforgettable quest with her fellow Kin. She must learn to kill and lead an army into battle, or Azimuth—and Earth—will fall.

It took me a little bit of time to get into this book because I had trouble doing the bit of a jump from one to the other of the time frames if you could call it that. The portal bit for me was just a little bit “yeah okay”. That aside however the rest of the book was really enjoyable for me. The world that has been created is inventive and interesting. I love both the good guys and the bad guys, and for me a mark of a truly well developed and well written character is when I can like a bad guy.

For me this was a fast read that I read cover to cover without to much issue. The part that was perplexing to me was in the beginning and not very long, so it did not take away from my enjoyment. I would recommend this book to anybody who wants a good read.

Book Tour: Spin the plate by Donna Anastasi

Today we have an excerpt from Spin the Plate, by Donna Anastasi, currently on tour with Walker Author Tours. Here we see the hero of the story, Francis, reflecting on his first encounter with Jo. Enjoy, and don’t forget to pick up your copy of Spin the Plate!

Francis was distracted. He’d been haunted all day by the woman he’d spoken to on the subway. His face reddened as he remembered once again what he’d said to her, Jesus loves you, you know…He rested his elbows on the desk and pressed hard against his eyebrows with the palms of his hands. Great opening line, Francis. But what choice did he have? When he received ‘a word,’ as he sometimes did, he felt obliged to deliver it, no matter how inconvenient.
His chest rose and fell heavily as his thoughts flooded with the image of her powerful body and exquisite face: he’d stole a long enough look to penetrate her harsh expression and see the features beneath—distinctive cheek bones, long lashes, full lips. She was unlike any other woman he’d ever met—spirited, strong, iron-willed, and absolutely unafraid. He closed his eyes and imagined the scowl melting from her face. She looked serene. And beautiful. She was angry and hurting, but behind the hurt there was something there. He had to speak with her again.

Book Review: Spin the Plate by Donna Anastasi

Synopsis of Spin the Plate: Jo is a survivor of a bleak and abusive childhood who roams the city streets at night as a powerful vigilante. Francis is a mysterious man she meets on the subway train. In this story, the average-guy hero battles to win the battered heart of the wary, edgy, less-than-perfect heroine. “A fast-paced, edgy, darkly comic tale of resilience, romance, and redemption that breaks over you in waves.” – Holly Robinson, author

Spin the plate is not a book that is for the faint of heart. The content is of course emotional and gripping with the past the Jo has. However for every bit of darker emotional edge you also see a spirit that is a fighter one that despite everything she has been through wants to battle back and find sense of normalcy again. In Jo you find a character that you can really admire. She has been through so much and yet she is a fighter both in the thought of the word and literally with her vigilante justice she serves out.

The book is well written and a really good read. I like a book that gets me emotionally involved and this one does it. While I connected more with Jo I think Francis is also a good character and very relate able for readers which always makes for a great read. I would recommend this one for anyone who likes a story that not only has a romantic angle, because it does have that. Francis is a great guy trying to win the heart of his battered lady. But a story about fighter who take abuse that she has suffered and comes back in a very kick ass way. The writing is solid and the plot takes a nice progressive curve with the pacing. So as long as your not scared of a little bit of the dark side with some dark comedy wrapped around it, give Spin the plate a try, I promise you will not regret it.

Guest Post: From Milton C. Toby: Books We Read, Books We Use

If your house is anything like mine, there are books everywhere. Some shelves even have rows of paperbacks stacked behind other rows of books, which means that I can’t remember which ones are hidden, and couldn’t get to them even if I could recall their titles.

For now, though, let’s concentrate on two areas within easy reach, the reading table beside your bed and the place where you write.

Because I write mostly non-fiction, that’s what I generally read. The stack of books on my bedside table as I write this includes a mix: Cormac McCarthy’s Cities of the Plain; Mark Bowden’s The Finish: The Killing of Osama Bin Laden; Douglas Waller’s Wild Bill Donovan: The Spymaster Who Created the OSS and Modern American Espionage; and Lawrence Scanlan’s The Horse God Built: The Untold Story of Secretariat, the World’s Greatest Racehorse.

(Analogous to bedside table books are the audio books on my iPod. I just finished David McCullough’s National Book Award winner The Path Between the Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal 1870-1914 and cued up John Sandford’s Virgil Flowers novel Mad River.)

These are the books I read.

More telling, though, might be the books that I use every day, the ones beside my computer, lined up like soldiers waiting to be called into action:

The two-volume Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (everyone needs a good dictionary, and this is one of the best); The Oxford Desk Dictionary and Thesaurus; The Chicago Manuel of Style (the guide required by my publisher); The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law (the style Bible for people who write for magazines); two different editions of Strunk and White’s The Elements of Style (if you’re going to rely on one general usage stylebook, this is the one); Bill Bryson’s Dictionary of Troublesome Words; and Eats, Shoots & Leaves.

Which books do you read? Which ones do you use in your writing?

Note from Ambrosia: Made me smile to know I am not the only one with rows of hidden books 🙂
