Teaser Tuesday 1/8/13

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Okay I confess last week I had not actually started this one as I was finishing up NOOR. So here is another one from my current read.

“I never want to hear that word again,” he ordered. “You are are not just the Queen of Scotland but a Queen Among women. You are beautiful to me. You…you and those bonny lads…are….”- his voice softened “everything to me.” ~ 42% The Forgotten Queen

Date a Girl who reads..

“You should date a girl who reads.
Date a girl who reads. Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes, who has problems with closet space because she has too many books. Date a girl who has a list of books she wants to read, who has had a library card since she was twelve.

Find a girl who reads. You’ll know that she does because she will always have an unread book in her bag. She’s the one lovingly looking over the shelves in the bookstore, the one who quietly cries out when she has found the book she wants. You see that weird chick sniffing the pages of an old book in a secondhand book shop? That’s the reader. They can never resist smelling the pages, especially when they are yellow and worn.

She’s the girl reading while waiting in that coffee shop down the street. If you take a peek at her mug, the non-dairy creamer is floating on top because she’s kind of engrossed already. Lost in a world of the author’s making. Sit down. She might give you a glare, as most girls who read do not like to be interrupted. Ask her if she likes the book.

Buy her another cup of coffee.

Let her know what you really think of Murakami. See if she got through the first chapter of Fellowship. Understand that if she says she understood James Joyce’s Ulysses she’s just saying that to sound intelligent. Ask her if she loves Alice or she would like to be Alice.

It’s easy to date a girl who reads. Give her books for her birthday, for Christmas, for anniversaries. Give her the gift of words, in poetry and in song. Give her Neruda, Pound, Sexton, Cummings. Let her know that you understand that words are love. Understand that she knows the difference between books and reality but by god, she’s going to try to make her life a little like her favorite book. It will never be your fault if she does.

She has to give it a shot somehow.

Lie to her. If she understands syntax, she will understand your need to lie. Behind words are other things: motivation, value, nuance, dialogue. It will not be the end of the world.

Fail her. Because a girl who reads knows that failure always leads up to the climax. Because girls who read understand that all things must come to end, but that you can always write a sequel. That you can begin again and again and still be the hero. That life is meant to have a villain or two.

Why be frightened of everything that you are not? Girls who read understand that people, like characters, develop. Except in the Twilight series.

If you find a girl who reads, keep her close. When you find her up at 2 AM clutching a book to her chest and weeping, make her a cup of tea and hold her. You may lose her for a couple of hours but she will always come back to you. She’ll talk as if the characters in the book are real, because for a while, they always are.

You will propose on a hot air balloon. Or during a rock concert. Or very casually next time she’s sick. Over Skype.

You will smile so hard you will wonder why your heart hasn’t burst and bled out all over your chest yet. You will write the story of your lives, have kids with strange names and even stranger tastes. She will introduce your children to the Cat in the Hat and Aslan, maybe in the same day. You will walk the winters of your old age together and she will recite Keats under her breath while you shake the snow off your boots.

Date a girl who reads because you deserve it. You deserve a girl who can give you the most colorful life imaginable. If you can only give her monotony, and stale hours and half-baked proposals, then you’re better off alone. If you want the world and the worlds beyond it, date a girl who reads.

Or better yet, date a girl who writes.”

Musing Monday 1/7/13

Musing Monday is hosted over at Should Be Reading.

Musing Mondays asks you to muse about one of the following each week…

• Describe one of your reading habits.
• Tell us what book(s) you recently bought for yourself or someone else, and why you chose that/those book(s).
• Tell us what you’re reading right now — what you think of it, so far; why you chose it; what you are (or, aren’t) enjoying it.

One of my reading habits is that I simply MUST have a drink with me when I read. I may not even drink from it but for some reason I really need it to be with me and within distance when I read. No matter where I read I must have the drink with me. When I go on trips via plane or anything else my friends always have a laugh at me because I will purposely buy a drink before I can sit and happily read. I know it is a little weird, but that is my habit. So what’s yours?

The Sunday Salon 1/6/13

Here it is Sunday again and tomorrow is Monday. I really do not like Monday’s I am sure that is no different than a lot of people. This week has been a little bit slow for reading for me because I have had a lot of other projects that needed my attention. Some rehearsal’s and some article writing and of course real life.

I did a lot of time intensive meals this week for dinner which if you ask me go very well with book reading. Yes my friends I can make everything go in with reading ha ha! I have no idea if I am going to have enough time for time intensive meals this coming week which is why I did a bunch in advance and either froze the whole meal or the components so I can just pop things together. Freezing will lose me a little of the flavor, but I am confident over all I wont lose to much.

I am enjoying my current read The Forgotten Queen a lot. If I did not have all that other stuff I was working on I am sure I would be done already. I keep waffling on what to read next when I have time to ponder that as well. I have stated about 4 different books so far and I am not going to be surprised if it ends up being one I have not listed at all. Such is the life of a reader right?

Well that is all I have to say on that front for The Sunday Salon this week. I am going to go wiggle my hiney to some more music for a bit. 🙂

WWW Wednesday 1/2/13

To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions…

• What are you currently reading?
• What did you recently finish reading?
• What do you think you’ll read next?

Happy New Year everyone..here are my replies.

I am currently reading The Forgotten Queen a lovely Tudor Era one I just started.

I just finished Noor which was FANTASTIC and I will have my review posted later this month as it is for a blog tour.

and what I will read next I am not 100% sure. I may go ahead and read Covet which was on my list to start the year with. However if Lily of the Nile gets here I may be tempted to jump right into that one.

“What of my Palfreys?” I asked my heart racing in panic. “What of the palfreys from my Father?”
“All gone, Your Grace.” she said softly “I am sorry.”
“No!” I cried, throwing myself face down on the bed and burying my head in my folded arms. ~ The Forgotten Queen 14%

Musing Monday 12/31/12

Musing Monday is hosted over at Should Be Reading.

I recently bought myself Lily of the Nile. I got it because of my love of Roman and Egyptian history and well I have always loved Antony and Cleopatra. Historical novels that deal with their kids are great because so little is documented about what happened to them. I have not gotten it in the mail yet but you can be assured I am watching my mail man like a hawk.

Ambrosia’s Best of 2012

So here we are on the cusp of another New Year and I am feeling reflective. Looking at others who have posted there Best of posts and decided well I want to do that too. So looking back over 2012 here are a few of my favorites.

Life of Pi

I admit I only decided to read this book after seeing the commercials for the movie. However I still have not seen the movie and I really LOVED the book. I have never been so thankful to a commercial.

The Russian Concubine

I got this one on a whim when I saw it posted on Paperback Swap. What a fantastic choice that turned out to be. I loved it.

Jack & Rochelle

A touching real life story that still haunts me..

A Countess Below the Stairs

I do not remember why I got this one but I know I got it on PBS and I am very happy I did. It was such a great read and I loved how it took us on one woman’s journey from upper class to lower and back again.

The Sunday Salon 12/30/12

It has been a long time since I have done a Sunday Salon but I am going to try to do it again today and see where it takes us. The New Year is upon us and I hope that all of my readers have a Happy one. We will not be doing much in this neck of the woods for the holiday but staying at home and enjoying watching the Ball drop on TV.

This week has been a fairly slow one for me but I don’t mind that. I need a little bit of rest and relaxation time. The hardest part of the week for me has been when I finished reading Love’s Portrait I had declared I would not start another book until New Years. Of course since I have finished the book all I want to do is start a new one. It has been for me a herculean task not to start one. So you ask what have I done?

Well I made sure my Birth of a Notion blog was doing good and got all the widgets and such transferred over.I have to say that I think it looks very good and all ready for 2013. I replied to all of the letters I had and have been left going “soo is it time yet?”. Well did you know that at 4am Central time in Samoa it will be Midnight? Oh yeah I went and googled it. I think it is safe to say that it counts as New Years since I did not state a time or timezone don’t you think?

As suspected I have already changed my mind on what to read come the start of the New Year from my Blog hop post but I don’t think of it as a bad thing as I can read my other choices in due time. I mean they are books it is not like they are going to run away right? So what will I be cracking into as soon as one place in the world has celebrated New Years?

I have two selections one is for a coming blog tour and will fit in nicely with my animal challenge of the year. It is called Noor about a Champion race horse. Ambrosia Horses oh yeah some of you are saying THAT MAKES SENSE!

Second is one I got from Net Gallery that does not come out till more to the end of Jan it is The Forgotten Queen..oh yeah a Historical about a Tudor but not any of the usual.

So Happy Sunday everyone and Happy New Years.

Book Review: Love’s Portrait by Monica Burns

When Julia Westgard commissions a nude portrait of herself, her rebellious behavior puts her at odds with the Marlborough Set’s most notorious rake, Morgan St. Claire. From the first moment Morgan sees Julia’s portrait, he’s determined to have her. But the woman he meets is a far cry from the image on canvas. What starts out as a simple exercise in seduction quickly evolves into a quest to reveal the true Julia Westgard. With each sensually, erotic encounter, he employs every seductive weapon at his disposal in hopes of making Julia see she really is the woman in Love’s Portrait.

My First thought when I finished Love’s portrait was “well crap”. That was because I said I would not start a new book until after new years once I finished that one and well there is a bit of time left until New years. Pushing that aside..

Love’s Portrait introduces us to Julia and Morgan who are both strong and stubborn personalities. However they both have their pains and things that hold them back from the happiness they could both have. For Julia her now dead Husband Oscar forced her into submission and I do mean forced her into submission. Securing her to their marriage bed and rutting, as well as several other forms of abuse they left her scarred and afraid of the bondage of marriage.

For Morgan he grew up in an unhappy household. His parents did not love one another by the time he came along and they fought constantly. So his Father ignored him until he came of age to take over the family Company and his Mother resented him as he looked more and more like his Father. So all of this made Morgan also swear off marriage. However what happens when the unmovable object meets the unstoppable force?

A very hot and erotic romance novel is what you get. Monica Burns has created a very intense relationship and I fully enjoyed each moment. The erotic scenes were plentiful but not over the top and all of them very well written. I love the give and take of the dominance and submission between Julia and Morgan but also the way that their relationship grows. Both of them without seeking it find solace in one another and healing for the past harms. I love it! This whole wonderful relationship thanks to a painting and a handkerchief.
