Tada! The new Purple Booker design has arrived….well mostly.

Once upon a time…

Okay, so I announced on the previous teaser Tuesday that you would likely find the place was a little bit changed here at The Purple Booker. Or a lot changed, depending how you look at it. The bottom line though is after almost 11 years of this blog being a blog, it was time to really spruce up the place. And to work on getting a little more savvy with the times.

I have loved books my whole life. I am sure that is a statement that will strike a chord with just about any reader of this blog. Trips to the library growing up for me were like trips to mecca. Getting to go to the used bookstore and select a few books as a treat was better then any fancy doodad or pair of designer shoes that other kids preferred.

I simply devoured books from an early age, summers I was usually found curled up on the porch reading a book I would also beg my Mom to take me back to the library so I could swap out books. I read under the covers with a flashlight all the time. And finding out that I would never ever be able to read every book in the world was truly a sad event for me. It was an event that I literally grieved for.

2018…is coming.

I feel like it has snuck up on me, but of course it hasn’t 2018 was always going to come. I am behind on my usual things, like selecting challenges and other items. I have been really busy, but the good news is I am not going to beat myself about it. I am going to set myself the goal of having all of my 2017 reviews caught up by the end of January and I will have my 2018 challenges picked out by then as well.

Of course I will keep running Musing Monday & Teaser Tuesday for as long as everyone want’s to see it! I hope everyone will keep coming and that 2018 will be a fantastic year for everyone! 2017 was a mixed bag for me I am hoping that 2018 will be more on the side of the up then the down. I know much of it will be adjusting for me, the first new year in 17 of them without my Dutchy girl.

Alas poor Kindle…

So in November I decided to treat myself to a newer Kindle. I had not upgraded for a while and thought it would be a nice treat. There was nothing wrong with my current kindle, it is just a bit older and if I am honest, I wanted to be able to pick a different voice for when I use the text to speech as I crochet. I know a little bit shallow, but hey, we all have our moments right?

Alas through a no fault of my own accident the screen has a nice long crack in it. Upsetting as that is I figured there wouldn’t be to much of a problem sorting it out seeing as I put the kindle away safely when I was done with it and it is a just a hair over 2 months old. It should be covered under warranty, right?

Wrong.

I won’t have a huge fit about it, I am sure that is now probably industry standard for all touch devices. Which I always think is a bit of bunk. Of course the screen is the most expensive part of the device if I recall correctly and lets face it some of them are made cheaply.

This post comes along because while they did finally decide to agree to replace my new kindle as a “one time just for you thoughtful thing to do.” I couldn’t help but just want to sigh a bit. I was made very much to feel as if I should be kissing a ring or something because they were willing to do this. I do appreciate that they did offer and I should have verified the darn warranty before hand so my fault there but can’t help the pet peeve. Don’t make the customer feel like they should be worshiping the ground you walk on because you are going to replace the device (I suspect I am going to get a refurb for my less than 3 month old Kindle but I could be wrong).

Of course, this whole post is being made because I am grumpy about having to wait for the workable one to show up after I send back the old one. So feel free to dismiss this post while I mourn my having to wait on the kindle.

Happy New Year, Welcome 2017

A warm welcome to 2017 a very happy New year to all. I hope that whomever sees this will have a good year ahead. I think we can all agree that 2016 was not the best of years. There was so much loss! 2017 is a clean slate, a new chapter and can be truly fantastic. As the Doctor says, we are all stories in the end so let’s make it a good one. Let’s make 2017 a good one!

I never tend to make resolutions for the year. I feel that when you do that you tend to set yourself up for failure, there is just something about that phrase New Year’s resolution. I do, however, choose to make goals for the year. Things I want to accomplish and truly have a plan towards doing, all reasonable ones. Goals for reading this year can of course be checked out on the reading challenge page. I have signed up for several challenges and the main Goodreads one this year will be for 52 books one per week seems manageable this year, my hopeful year of balance.

Changes are coming in 2017

Sometimes you have to shake things up. I have been thinking about shaking the book blog up for the last year or so, I never took the plunge last year, but 2017 is going to be the year for change. It is hard to think that I have run this blog since the end of 2008. I started out over at blogspot with a free blog and was happy with it. Over the years, however, I have changed to my own domain and different theme’s and of course migrated to WordPress. The one thing that has always nagged at me since I got my domain name is that I was never able to get the exact name of the blog. Icewarmth.com has always been a play on the actual title of the blog, Fire & Ice. I thought if I waited long enough I would eventually get something close, alas, that just never seems to have materialized.

Now, as I sit here looking back over the year I think about all the things that have happened in 2016. All the changes that have happened in the world and in my life. The conclusion? It is time for a change up in the blog line up. The content itself will remain the same and I may be taking on the job of hosting some meme’s that I have been posting on this blog almost since the beginning, the current host is making changes in her blog life too. However, the domain name, the blog name and the theme will be changed. I will still keep icewarmth.com for the next year and just have it redirect so everyone can get used to the change, but the change is coming. The new book blog will be called….

The Purple Booker

A little silly, I know, but it suits me as many who know me will know. A fun play on Hooker yes (because I crochet, what were you thinking?) and a little play with one of my favorite book series by Lauren Willig. I am nervous and excited at the same time about the change. I hope that my lovely readers will be happy with the changes when they happen as well. I still have a lot of things to get in order before the change, but just couldn’t wait to make the announcement.

Happy Labor Day

pictures-for-labor-day-2

No Musing Monday this week. Just a big Happy Labor day to everyone. I know like many people I tend to think of the end of summer, the start of school and a good old BBQ when I think of Labor Day. Not a bad thing at all!

However, here is what it was set out to mean from the Department of Labor’s website:

Labor Day: What it Means

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

So enjoy the BBQ and the history!

Happy Treason Day!!!!

No really Happy 4th of July and Happy Birthday America and Captain America. Even if we did commit treason to get where we are today. This is one of my favorite Holidays and not for the reasons many people enjoy it. Oh sure I enjoy the fireworks and BBQ as much as the next gal, but I enjoy the history behind it. I am fascinated with reading books about the revolution. One of my favorites so far has been this fantastic book Revolutionary. Still a review I agree with!

So enjoy the day! Think about the history and the people who continue to defend us and have a little bit of fun!

Memorial Day

Today I skip Musing Monday in honor of Memorial Day. Freedom is so often taken for granted specially in today’s age. However, freedom is not free it is in fact very expensive and the cost is measured in lives. While everyone debates and throws things back and forth during an election year I hope they will all take a moment to remember why they have the freedom to debate and share their feelings on candidates.

memorial-day-thank-you2

We will go back to our regularly scheduled book blogging for the rest of the week but for now. I shall just leave this hear. Thank you to all of our service men and women who have given of themselves. Whether they gave some or all, I salute all of them. A respectful nod is also given from me to those men and women throughout the world who have defended freedoms. While I support the American armed forces the most as an American I know others fight for freedom as well.

The new design

I will still be using the old design and swapping them around of course but here is our new fresh design for Fire & Ice! I think it looks pretty fantastic and I hope that all of you enjoy it. I really have fun coming up with themes and hey who doesnt love some hunks to look at right?

Reading Rainbow Kickstarter

I grew up in an age where I could watch reading rainbow and I did. When I was a kid it really was one of my favorite shows! You could have fun and be introduced to books and it really helped encourage my love of reading. I was so sad when reading rainbow became a no go whole generations missing out on it. So I was over the moon when I found out about the new Kickstarer campaign by LeVar Burton to bring it back.

From the site:

Hi. LeVar Burton here. You may know me as Kunta Kinte, from ROOTS, or Geordi La Forge, from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

You also may have grown up with me on Reading Rainbow.

It was my mother who taught me that, by picking up a book, I could “go anywhere” and “be anything.” Ever since Reading Rainbow began in 1983, I have dedicated myself to fostering a love of reading in children, just as my mother did for me.

Over the past year, I have watched Kickstarter bring communities together to support artists and inventors. Again and again, I have been inspired by watching like-minded people team up to accomplish impossible dreams, and to change the world.

Now, I am hoping you will join me on my mission: to bring Reading Rainbow back for every child, everywhere.

I joined in on the campaign and I think you could too. Here it is KickStarter
